Well they are close to one in the same. But here's where to factor in another decision, are you wanting to go crossfire with a different board and power supply? That's the key right there.

If not the 9800GT would only be slightly better. Outweighs the extra $40-50? I would say unlikely.

My votes go for the HD3870.

No crossfire for me, but the 9800GT is significantly better for Crysis. Unfortunately it also uses 20W more at idle than the 3870 which is alot even though my PC isn't on unless I'm using it.

Yes but willing to purchase the card for one game and one game only?

EDIT: O btw thank you for the link to the 3870! My brother-in-law and my cousin has been wanting one for cheap.

Glad to help!

Warhead and Far Cry 2 are all I plan to play in the near future...at least all that will really make a difference between those two

I'm a longtime ATI fanboi...but I just switched from AMD to Intel so maybe I should give Nvidia a shot too.

Oh trust me, I was an nVidia guy myself. nVidia drivers are so tweakable. I say hey if you got the extra cash ...

after reading all the troubles in the other thread about PowerColor (even though I never had any) I would go 9800GT this time.

at $30 more? do your math again :p

assuming dan is running 1680x1050 going by is 22" monitor:
according to W1z the 9800GT only performs 16% better at that resolution, yet at these prices it costs 42% more

Benchmark Scores yay it works! =]
perhaps. however the 9800GT is very overclockable so you can get more out of it if you want

also 16% may not sound like much. but when you're pulling 30fps running crysis it could be the difference between 30fps in some spots, which some may find acceptable for that game, and 25. which might still be acceptable until the fps start to drop in other spots and and 25fps turns to 20, whereas the 9800GT will then be doing 25 and above while the 3870 is struggling to keep pace at 20-25fps. in my time playing crysis i find the more you can get out of it, even if its just 5 fps, the better. because more fps in that game can be hard to come by :'(

so it may be 42% more money for 16% more performance. but that 16% can be just what you need in some instances. thats gotta be worth at least....30% more. or somethin'

:ohwell:

definitely a valid argument, which may or may not apply to these two cards
I was simply proving that his statement about price/performance was wrong, from a strictly statistical standpoint
