4850 is a big jump from the 3850. Sure the 4870 is better so if you want to wait go ahead, if you want one now the 4850 is a great choice.

going to a 4850 from there will be a huge jump. If you can wait longer still, the 4850X2 will be coming out soon!

It depends on the price of the 4850 x2 as the 3850 x2 was priced stupidly .:(

not worth it IMO, the 3850 costs £60 now and 4850 is nearly twice the money .. is it twice the performance? not really , wait for prices to come below £100 then its worth it

Depending on the CPU used yeah it is twice the performance especially once AA is enabled.

There aren't any games out that a 3850 can't make pretty. You might not be playing at 16x12 (or whatever the widescreen of that is), but you can play it. I'm in the same situation, happy with my card, but the temptation of a 48xx series card is strong. I can handle waiting til they drop another 75$. I'll just play Warhammer in the meantime.

Prices drop. There aren't even rumors about a 5xxx series yet, once those hit you'll see these cards start to slide a bit. In the meantime just pick up a second 3850 and enjoy the crossfire. You could probably get one for less than 100$

I play on a 22'' widescreen at 1440 x 900 but my board is an sli board so i cant do crossfire & i only got this board because it had a lot of ide and sata2 connections for the hd's i have.

Or i could switch to the other side but i am not really likely as its not fanboyism but i just have a better understanding of ati cards.

It IS worth the money. You'd have to crossfire two 3850s AND overclock to get to the 4850's performance...

Look at post #7 http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=64120

A 3870x2 has a hard time competing. I don't think 3850 crossfire would fare better..

Oh yeah, the 4850 stomps even a 3870, probably close to a 3870x2. It will be a nice little jump in performance for not much of a price loss.

I went from a 3870 to a 4850 and that was a pretty decent jump you will be surprised at the difference it made.

If you can wait then get the 4870 when its on sale or something.

I wanted to wait till thanksgiving/christmas to build a new machine with 4850 or 70 on it, but unfortunately I have to build now because of broken machine and threw in a 4850 and I love it.

4850 is about 100% performance improvement over 3850. But 4870 only another 15% on 4850. So the significant change and $value is going to 4850. That's the sweetspot today. 4850 is also cooler/quieter than 4870.

If you REALLY need "more" than 4850, then get 4850x2 when its out. That will be better investment than 4870 IMO.

100% improvement lol :D

therefore, a 4850 will get me 24000 3dmark06 score and ~60fps in Crysis according to that theory

24000 3dmark no... 60fps in crysis, ya depending on the rest of your system and your clock...

Put it this way my 256mb 3850 clocked would not handle crysis in high dx9 once you hit the ice. My 4850 under clocked handles crysis in very high dx10 and warhead in enthusiast at 1920x1080 smoothly dx9.

So the speed is not even on the same level.. 3dmark is a horrible program for benchmarking gaming performance in all reality. It gives a very baseline idea.
