Fallout 3 is due soon and it'll be time for me to upgrade. I'm trying to keep my budget as low as possible without sacrificing too much performance. I've narrowed things down to these 3 cards.

I only noticed the Asus 9800gt Ultimate after reading through a review on Hardware Canucks and seeing that it's really a low priced GTX. It overclocks like a beast.

So which should I go for? I do hope to eventually put better cooling on the card, but that wouldn't be anytime too soon. Keeping power consumption, temps and overclockability in mind, which card would you guys go for?

Well HD4850 > 9800GTX.... So a underclocked, low binned 9800GTX = <<< HD4850.

if they are priced close get the 4850 imo

if you can save a good amount get the GT

what is an "Ultimate" edition?

you can get a regular 9800GT from tiger direct atm with COD4 for $109 after rebate

power consumption differences are negligible, overclocking is decent on both cards, and i wouldn't say the "Ultimate" is a low priced 9800GTX. not really

4850 would be my choice at $150 and up. or anywhere in the neighborhood

Well the 9800GT has a dual slot cooler and is the least expensive. You wouldnt have to change the cooler and you could probably OC it like hell with the dual slot fan that on it already. Plus it comes with a free game.

I'd say this is an easy choice. 9800GT

I also looked at the review on hardware canucks. It runs with the 4850 on pretty much all games and the Asus version he linked is cheap.

If he added a dual slot 4850 for the same price I would have chosen that.

Have you thought about this one?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814261023

They are 8800GT cards(renamed), wile has had one clocked I think at 850Mhz stable(for half or the full year how ever u look at it), and has had it as high as 950 on bench. That's just on water, on a single 120 rad.(no a/c in his house upstairs also lol)

Looks like a pretty nice mid level gaming card!

If the price stays around $100-$125 it should sell, but if its a re-dubbed 8800gt and they push the price of the 4850, they are going to hit rock bottom...

from the reviews I have read they look neck and neck.

Yea I just keep it at stock cause I don't need to overclock it to get better frames in anything.. Warhead and Crysis still run like crap no matter what I use so I just gave up on them..

Yea I think it's 2 high as well. It's like that Hitler video we seen lol I would of gave you the 50 bucks lol. I know that they do clock very well.

I think this thread just shows it

I have held the top SLi score for how long now?
Wile is still in the top ten single cards also, and he holds the top 8800GT Vantage score with no phyx drivers at hwbot.org.

I found you need to find those custom setup files to get it 2 run smooth. Crysis renders games different than other games......SLi did help it a lot.

and

Well I seen Crysis and Warhead on a new Intel box(yes that one, and not the extreme) with a 4870(guess what brand) and it ran very smooth.

I guess I am unlucky because I have never seen any crysis game even with custom configs run any higher than 30-40fps which is pretty unacceptable since it doesn't even have that good of graphics and has a ton of pop up crap.

I run 30-50 maxed with jrobs custom config @ 1680x1050 <-- off topic.

On topic--> with competition these days once you pick a price point its tough to make a bed choice unless you buy from some outdated supplier. With Newegg you purchase exactly how much performance you can afford.

I'd still recommend the dual slot 9800GT unless he can afford a dual slot 4850 like I have. I hate single slot cards.

Wow... I run Crysis @ 1920x1080 enthusiast on my 4850 clocked to 540/900...

Oh never mind vista, something is screwed up with that game and vista, runs like TRASH,
for 5 minutes I'm good, then boom someone starts talking to me and poof 1fps if I'm lucky.

woah woah there , hold on . I smell sour grapes there for not being able to run it on max or good fps

Crysis has the best graphics in any game yet to grace PC screens, Period.

No game comes close to it in quality.

And Crysis can be excused for looking beautiful and not running smooth, same way your GF can be excused for being the hottest, sexiest in the world and being a little confused ! :D

This is a typo on Neweggs part. The Ultimate does NOT have 128 stream processors. I've verified this with ASUS. It has 112, just like all of the other GT's.

Well there are parts of that, I think Oblivion with all the mods and on Super AA and HDR or 32Q with N compares to it BIG time.

Now Crysis can bring a system down to it's knees, so can Oblivion with all the mods and forced high end AA.

It's sad... I can play Crysis Warhead in dx9 enthusiast with 4x AA @ 1920x1080 perfectly well.

Ohh well I can play Crysis in dx10 4x AA @ 1920x1080 all very high, all the way through..

That game just seriously needs a lot of work, both of them.

Now what will really drive ya nuts is the old game Neverwinter Nights 2, I can't play that maxed, it performs the same it did on my 2600xt...
BOO...
