Drastic measures to overclock an 8800GT

Ok i wasn't sure if I should bother making a thread but here goes. I've been dying to overclock my 8800GT and I don't know how to do pencil mods or anything to increase the voltage. The problem is if I overclock by 10mhz it becomes unstable and crashes all the time, so I think I need to increase the voltage but I dunno how to do that because in the ntune settings its greyed out does anyone have any ideas.

you cant pencil mod but i you have resitors or pots you can or you can mod the bios

That's called a hardmod, you replace a resistor that supplies voltage to the gpu with a variable one, so you can increase the voltage fed to your gpu=more mhz! Also more heat...

Sounds difficult I just wanted to oc til I got a newer gpu preferably the 4870X2. I want to do a bios flash but I don't know what the default voltage is and what an unsafe voltage is.

If your on stock cooling that'll explain your hard time to OC the card.....If you want to OC It you really should put a better cooler on It....when i had my 8800GT I never even fired It up with the stock cooler......I slapped on a custom cooler right out of the box and cranked It to 770core until the day I sold It to a buddy....who still runs It that hard to this day.....cooling Is the trick to exploiting these cards....as the stock cooler Is TOTAL garbage.

This gave me a whopping and I mean WHOPPING 124 points over my previous 700/1000 OC in 3DMark06. THATS IT ALL THAT STRESS, and constant image of my $240 card turning into a brick for a crappy 124 points. This volt mod is total buppkis,crap,waste of time. Not only that even with my Accelero S2 and turbo module when I scanned for artifacts my temp rose over 90C! When running 3DMark06 it barely hit 80C for a second. Absolutely not worth anything, not even the $2 and change I spent on the pot. Yet when I run it at normal voltage 700/1000 temps barely touch 50C during the run. +30C for not even 150 points? Not worth it.

Who reads Tomshardware anyways these days??

ya i figured that was incredibly wrong. i just wanted to show him the pictures and i wasnt troubled to find any better pics as for this guys 125 point gain id have to say he is doing something a tad opposite of the right way..

It was readable back in 1998 but not for years anymore...

I hate reading tomshardware reviews they are so badly done e.g. when they tested a phenom against a e7200 to see if multi core was better than dual core in certain applications and each cpu had wildly different clock speeds and systems.

I've had it for about a year though. I do want to RMA it but it doesn't have the stock cooler which I threw out because it was broken

If you can't oc it 10Mhz more then you have a bad core. It's border line, but it does work stock like it is supposed to do.

I have had this talk with many around here. When cards first come out they are better cards, then after a while they start using cheaper parts here and there. As long as they work stock it does not matter, but when they are first released is when all the OC talk is done about them so it's already on the books )

Yeah, I doubt this is a voltage problem, if you can't even get another 10 mhz out of it. I've never owned a card, even a lowly 8400gs that I couldn't pull at least 10-15 mhz out of. What software are you using to overclock? Have you considered that something else may be the cause of your crashes? Stability test your cpu and memory just to make sure.

Its only unstable when I overclock the gpu. I use rivatuner because atitool doesn't like my GT. I've checked for stability in the cpu and ram etc and they are fine it just seems to be the gpu

Bet it depends on the mood of the RMA guy....if you send it in with your heatsink you have on it now, maybe......but you would not get that back.

Yes. Pepper, if you're at 40c under load(I'd like to see validation on that...) then it's most likely the card is just a poor performer when it comes to overclocking.


Even with the best soft-overclockable GT in the world, your performance isn't going to increase that much.

Just play it safe and hold out; you've had it this long...

same with my 9600GT... can OC only 10mhz on the core but its an overclocked version vanilla is 650mhz core my OC version is 700mhz so im pretty much fine with it...

I can OC my shader +250mhz and memory + 150mhz so im happy with it...

so you cant basically OC on core shader and memory? what happen if you OC 10mhz will it freeze then bsod and it displays nv4.disp? or driver stopped responding?
