Question about PCI Express cards

Is it possible to put the pci express 1x (the small socket such as a tv tuner) into a full size PCI express 16x slot and have it work ok without causing damage. :confused:

Good question.

Yes, according to Wiki, the 16x PCIE slot is totally lower-band comatible, the small slot towards the back of the case is the same, so any "X" will lock in on the right connectors.

"a PCIe card will physically fit (and work correctly) in any slot that is at least as large as it is (e.g. an x1 sized card will work in any sized slot)"

Note: the bottom slot in this pic is vanilla PCI!!!

Yes, PCI-E 1x cards can work in 16x slots. I'm pretty sure they can work in 4x slots too. I know 4x is pretty rare but I have seen some motherboards with a 4x slot.

electrical circuits dont pass any power if there isnt a connection. If pins are not connected with something between them, power cannot pass through them - therefore its not wasted.

A 16x card can also fit into a 4x lane, providing its open ended.

i have my PCI-E X1 Soundcard in the 2nd PCI-E X16 slot on my asus board...
I couldnt put it in any of the PCI-E X1 slots becuase my graphics card is too big.

works perfectly.. no worries

Any PCI-e card should work in any PCI-e slot. Cutting away the back of a PCI-e slot allows any card to work in it. Warranty of course will be voided that way.

Electrically it's chipset limitations. There are only so many lanes available on a given chipset. Physically it puzzles me, keeping the back of the slot open to give you more freedom of what to put in it or just using x16 connectors everywhere would be so handy. The only downside is having components behind the slot, though this isn't that much of an issue on most boards.
