Optical Drive Question

I just did a build for a customer. They wanted Windows XP so they got XP. Everything installed beautifully except I've noticed one oddity. When I go to My Computer, the optical drive is listed as a DVD-RAM drive. I haven't finished installing all of the software so I have yet to test its burning capabilities, but I found this to be quite odd. Any ideas?

Lite-On IHAS120-08 DVD/RW Drive
XP Pro SP3---haven't installed all of the updates yet

Just looked on my laptop (IBM T61p) - the dvd drive is listed as HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-U10N...

You should be fine :)

Funny - I just noticed it's listed as a "DVD-RAM Drive" in explorer as well. I'm on XP.

back when dvd stuff was just coming out there was a type known as dvd-ram. and very occasionaly you can find blank ram discs in the 99 cent bin at electronics boutiques. most new drives do retain the ability to write and read ram media. and some drives even lable themselves as dvd-ram. its not a problem.

it was basically first gen dvd rw. and the discs that went in it could be cartridge based. like the ancient original cd drives.

Hmm its probably just an older chipset I'm assuming. I ordered the wrong part to begin with. I wanted to get an IHAS220-06 with Lightscribe. It was the same price. I got click happy and thought that was what I ordered. :slap:

Thanks for that - I assumed it would have some legacy "weirdness"... my first DVD writer actually was DVD RAM compatible and came with a DVD-RAM disc (in an annoying case).

They touted DVD RAM to have much more of a life than DVD RW. But then I read an article that said the case was the reason for that - less physical touching led to a longer life over DVD/RW

Basically, DVD RAM = DVD/RW
