What about booting from the os cd and when it asks for the key, type in the key from office? You said office has the key right?

Yes, Office has the CD key.

yea, just do what you would normally do when u install the OS and see if u run into any trouble just to make certain. once you get to the CD key part shut it off. I suspect it will work fine.

Thanks a lot, it booted from CD fine with the Home Edition CD.:toast::)

Why doesn't Office boot? what makes it different?

i think because its not bootable, its not made for that. that would be my guess.

now you need an OS, feel like trying Vista out?

i honestly dont know because i'm still on XP. But SP2 should be out soon and plenty of folks here are happy with Vista. I'm sure they will be able to help you out if u have trouble. I'm just saying that it doesnt make sense to buy XP at this point, if i was buying now id get Vista.

I am hearing that Office XP is not an OS, its actually just a bunch of desktop apps(word, power point) bundled together.

i dont get it, how can you get your key in 386 folder if you were trying to reinstall, everything should be wiped by a preinstall format????

You put the CD in another system that has an OS installed on it.

And go to the folder to see your key, but its doesn't work for me tho.
