If I had 4 GB then I would go Vista. Since I only have 2GB then XP for a while till I get another 2GB. I was planning on skipping Vista but I guess Windows 7 would be far from releasing and next year we would see more DX10 games so bye2 WinXP Hello Vista :toast:

Turn off the constant disc search

You need to get the 64bit copy only tho....You get a programs files for 32bit apps, and one for 64 bit apps.

I think I can make vista run better on an older machine when it has at least a gig of ram in it. Better than I can XP.

Vista just handles memory better than XP does.

If you're gonna go Vista, go x64. Going x86 when you can run x64 just doesn't make much sense. But with your system I'd probably stick with XP and grab Vista / Win7 when you can upgrade your entire system. Vista works fine on 2GB, but after upgrading to 4GB it has been noticeably faster. Given the cost of DDR and how DDR3 prices are going down, I'd hold out while you can.

Please don't judge Vista x64 based on XP x64. XP x64 was largely unsupported, and was simply a rush job put out on the market as quickly as possible because people were buying 64-bit processors and wanted a 64-bit OS.

Vista x64 is much better than XP x64.

I just went from xp home to xp x64 pro and noticed a big difference. Where I live vista x64 is twice the price. I am still a little pissed at MS for forcing people to up-grade to vista to play some of their games and for DX10. It's not right.

Stay with XP and upgrade to W7 next year. IMO, Vista is mostly interface and widgets stuff. Underlying Vista there arent significant changes compared to XP64 or W2K3 other than the graphics driver model, which doesnt impact performance, but is just a different (and more robust/versatile) approach for software and OS to communicate "windows" and "graphics" commands.

Dont get me wrong. Vista is fine. If a new machine comes with it, great! But IMO is is not worth even $50 to upgrade unless you REALLY need to have the Vista skins. But if you are that needy, then you belong in the mac camp.

Memory management was greatly improved in Vista x64, Vista in generally is much better at managing memory than XP was.

Overall support for Vista x64 is much better than XP x64. This applies to both software and hardware(drivers), though now most Vista x64 drivers will work with XP x64 you just have to install them manually. Some software still recognizes XP x64 as a server OS, which isn't surprising considering it was just Server 2003 rebadged, and refuses to install.

Funny though i've never had a real problem with with XP x64 over the last 3 years. Maybe people should watch what they buy before buying and check shi 1st.

I've never had any thing unsupported by XP x64 all though i have by Vista. And found XP X64 much better than Vista on 2 other machines were as Vista has been some what a pain on both the same systems.

You have to go into the settings, and tell it not to look in any of the folders. You save a full 5 secs tops when you go look for something.......

I should say unlock super admin first.....other wise you have to right click on some of that stuff every time and run as admin.

Think of super admin in vista as root.

Try installing Acronis Disk Director Suit 10, works fine on Vista x64, won't install on XP x64. One of the many programs that simply don't work in XP x64 but work fine on Vista, and I love Acronis Disk Director.

The only problem I have had with Vista x64 is getting printer drivers to work across the network with x86 machines, and I had the same issue with XP x64 as it is an x64 vs. x86 issue, and not really an issue with Vista.
