Left4dead dedicated server

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering how to make the kind of dedicated servers that are used when you play left4dead online. The dedicated servers that host public games and that anyone can join. The dedicated server will be for campagin game play.

I know you can download the dedicated server L4D files through Steam...I've hosted a few lobbies for some rounds but that's about it...setting that up is pretty easy.

I'd say download the L4D Dedicated stuff (or if you have the install disc, maybe check on there for install files and documentation).

yea you can download the server from the tools section of steam. i have one running and it works really well on my machine with my internet connection. i have upload rate of 2Mbps and all players get great connections. of course i wish some of the options were made available in the gui rather than command line just to make things easier in game.

Do you use your server only to serve your friends? Or do you use your server to serve the public?

it is a public server and people join all the time. i dont do much configuring of it before launch cause there isnt much documentation on if it references any sort of config file on launch. basically it is just a public server that talks with steam and if players look for a certain game type is will create it for them to join.

About the server... EasyRhino and I were having some trouble with it, and I was not able to connect to his game, even with the "connect IPHERE" command.

Thats all i need to be able to do? Just setup a server so that anyone can join and so it talks with steam and when players look for a certain game type, it uses my dedicated server.

there is lag time if you start your own server and invite people. i am not sure why but everyone else can join right away. it must have something to do with the way dedicated servers talk to the steam master server.

Also what is lag time?

And can you put up a copy of your server config file, i would like to take a look at it.

im not using a server config file because i dont know what to name such a file, what to include in the file or which dir to put it in. i am just running the server with the basic settings. i have the necessary port forwarded. lag time is just the amount of time it takes for steam's master server to communicate with my server.

And also what kind of people are connecting to your server. Random people from the public or only people that you allow to connect?

The thing with all of Valves Dedicated server programs is they all start up with general settings (unless you use an autoexec.cfg file) and then you have to change the settings to how you want it either via command line or through the GUI, but the GUI is very restrictive.

Actually getting the server going is very simple, setting it up how you want can be a bit more work, I was running a CSS server (for clan use) for about 6 months, getting it running was easy, getting it set up so everyone could connect took me a while.

yea the gui is restrictive and it is hard to start it up right away and allow people i invite to join. do you know where to put an autoexec.cfg file?

Ah, sorry, now I remember.

it's Server.cfg and it goes within the cfg folder of the Left 4 Dead dedicated server install (which I'm having trouble locating, but it's generally in Steamapps somewhere).

I think by looking it's in Steamapps/common/left 4 dead

There's quite a lot of folders, and there's a Server bit with a load of config files etc. in there, but without reading a manual I wouldn't know where to put any files lol.

It doesn't quite work that way. When you join a "lobby" it's nothing more than a "chat room" set up on the hosts PC (via the steam master servers), when you Start a Game, it goes in search of a dedicated server, and then everyone is connected to the server and the lobby ceases to exist.

You can (I'm sure) set it up as a public server, then it's just a case of hoping people can see your server so they can connect. Not sure if there are other settings needed, never played with L4D dedi.

steam hosts the lobbies where people meet. when you click to start the game it actually searches for a dedicated server that meets your setting requirements.
