How to make a source map?

I'm looking into making a Left 4 Dead map of my school, thing is I don't know how. I opened up Hammer and then closed due to how overwhelming it was.

Can anyone help me get started or point me in the right direction thanks. :toast:

I remember making a map of your school in a game gets you to prison in America.

I would recommend reading tutorials though, start making a single room.

Well I don't know about that, but I think I'll be ok on that part.

I've tried looking up some tutorials all bad. I'd just like to know how to put walls in and set an environment.

i could make the map for you for a price

you would be bether off cus ur beginer not realy worth to start on a big project
start small and build up you got allot to leurn

All I can say is good luck man, and if you pull it off you get mad respect from me. Anyone that makes maps gets mad respect from me. It takes a lot of time and and patience. If you finish it be sure to let us know.

Thanks guys for all the input. Unfortunately under Source SDK Left 4 Dead isn't option for me to choose to make maps on with Hammer. So I'll be practicing with TF2. Then figuring out why that is?

Wow what do they not have a book "for dummies" now and days.

I'd like to try myself. Plus I would hate to roam around the halls taking pictures of the school, then having to send them to you. You know how hard it would be to take pictures of every thing in that Three story building... Very Hard, Expert Hard.

Well guys I have made several box rooms in a row. Gonna try and connect them with doors and find out how to put a spawning point and test it to see what its like. Its not as bad as I thought, so far at least.

DO NOT MAKE A MAP OF YOUR SCHOOL. A kid here in the states did the same thing and he got in huge trouble. I wish I could, my school has a lot of nooks and crannies that most people don't know about that would make good zombie locals.. sigh..

you'll have to wait until they release the .fgd file for L4D which contains all the entities and whatnot, then load that into Hammer. i was thinking of making a Ghosts of Mars map after seeing the film last night; a medium sized base map with zombies spewing forth from all over the place and you have to get on-board a train to finish the level.

Yeah I've read the story, utter BS. Called him a level 3 terrorist.

A. It was counter strike
B. He used the real name of the school
C. He was Asian and this was a bit after the Virgina school indecent with that crazy Asian guy who killed everybody
D. I plan on this being personal just for me. He got caught sharing it with friends which resulted in there parents telling the school
E. Why don't valve get arrested for making maps of hospitals, cities and what not in Left 4 Dead or any other game?

Hey i've tested my map through hammer, but how can I convert it to .bsp to play it with out hammer?

Exactly. Not to make this a controversial topic but just look at the accomplishments of those columbine kids, they practiced their plan by designing DOOM maps that looked just like the school.

i make maps for a mod called Zombie Panic (well now source) but i am working on a map right now and i am pretty good with hammer (been using it since HL1) if you need help PM me i'll give you my aim sn and i'll help you start off with your map and i can help with it i love projects!

valves maps arnt based on real places just made up ones where as these people made maps based on real life places

i want to still make an UT 3 map but its hard man i f'k up a part and now it wont let me subtract or add to the map and making elevators is hard!

It is intuitive for those that work on other CAD apps like AutoCAD. If you're not used to it, it can be a little difficult to understand.

I do recommend starting off with an easy one room, and learn how to do the lighting (which for me is the toughest part). Then build on it to make a second room, and try something totally different. I know how to use the "not so 1337" hammer app to make maps, but mine never really turned out the way I wanted them. Besides lighting, the toughest part is configuring hammer for the first time. There are lots of tuts on how to do that.
