Palit 1gb Hd4850 Sonic Edition - Wow!

Hi all, just needed to share this with ya and recommend a fantastic product, not just because it is Palit of course!

I bought a pair of these babies to crossfire having sold my lovely (and very quick) Gainward (subsiduary of Palit.....yes there is a trend here ) GTX260, anyways, they arrived today, highlights of the cards are:

1GB GDDR3 clocked at 1000mhz
685mhz Core clock
3 phase power design
8 pin PCI-E (comes with adaptor)
Non reference design and smaller than regular HD4850
Excellent aftermarker mini Accelero S1 type cooler.....thwe fan is angled as such that it blows all the hot air out of the back of the case.

Well, firstly, the downside, I was VERY dissapointed that these babies dont come with a crossfire bridge......WTF! So all I could do for now is pop one of the little monsters in......please bare with me on this "mini" excitement journey, I have not owned an ATI card since my lovely old 1800XT days, actually thats not quite true, I did buy a HD3870 the day they were release in the UK but I never even opened the box as the following day the 8800GT was released and went for that instead.

Anyways, to cut a long story short, I popped the little beast in the slot, installed CCC and Cat 8.11 drivers and as you do, set about some mild overclocking, well no mods, not even any tweaks (apart from using Rivatuner) and got her straight to 800mhz on the core stable!! have not tried anymore yet as I got a bit scared at that point! I will push some more during the week and then pop the other card in to see what that one can do so i can guage what settings for the crossfire rig.....hmmmmm crossfired HD4850's at 800+, now that hopefully will be nice.....all for the price of a high end GTX260

What really amazed me was this coolers performance, at 75% she is just audible....please check the temps in the screenie! I could run this card flat out at about 40% i reckon, anything upto 60% is inaudible.

Just did a furmark run at 810 and all seems well! Thanks for the offer, i will try and get them this end for speed so i can get XFire working this weekend but if I get stuck I might get back to you!

No idea - it came with my current card though (4850), never used it. Stayed in the box it came in ever since i got it.

Sorry! I got the last 2 palits from anywhere I could find in the UK, although I have found the identical "Xpertvision" Sonics even cheaper now but hey, Palits are close to our hearts!

There's 2 different lengths--3 and 5 inches maybe? It's to account for larger cooling solutions.

i still think that the 4850 IceQ is the best 4850 but these seem good too
the IceQ look like they have the best cooler but i cant confirm that

palits are known for being good overclockers and having above average cooling

that 4870 x2 by palit has to be the best card on the market available

hope you get some clocks out of them, im getting paulieg's gtx 260 should be some fun too, heard it comfortably beats the 4870 when oc'd and can catch up with a stock gtx 280, didnt you own a gtx 260 tatty why did you decide to go crossfire?

Yes I had a Gainward GTX260 which clocked to 800 that I sold Kyle last week, it got me in the top 5 on HWbot in 2006 on a 260 but was clocked the fastest of any of them they just had quads running near 5gig

I just fancied a change, have not played with ATi for nearly 3 years and TBH, for the price of a high end 260 I have cards that at 800Mhz in Xfire completely blow away a 280.....but thats the benching E penis in me talking......even though I am retired!

By choice, I still prefer single card solutions and for whatever reason have always prefered NVidia, if only for their driver packages, just though this might be fun!

Thanks, have already got two coming but I'll know for the future! If I can get these BIOS's flashed I think I might have at least 825mhz on the cores, I got to 810 last night fully stable, at 820 I could do anything but furmark would crash after about 5 minutes, not temps as she never went higher than the forties so it's just a voltage thing.....damn nice cards though, these babies are now faster than stock 4870's.......I likey....way to go Palit!
