I guess you could sand the cpu until the ihs is gone, thus not damaging it.

Phenom actually POSTed at 6.4Ghz but was unstable in Windows. ;-)

One could dremel the IHS off around the chip in order to have a free view on the chip+IHS thickness, and then sand the IHS off... But that would obviously still be a very tricky job...

Wouldn;t it just be easier and safer to lapp the IHS a mill or so of IHS isn;t going to make much difference to temps especially as it's soldered on (better thermal contact)

It was an ES so no warranty on it. By the looks of things i'll be leaving my IHS on for quite some time :p
