AMAZING! Now if I would rather have a new Core i7 or that... I think I'll take the Core i7. When the price of SSD's goes down, I'll make the jump.

That my plan except for Phenom II. No point in building a new machine with outdated technology! :toast:

Definitely gonna be building my Phenom II rig with 3 SDD's (two in RAID 5 and one reg). Hopefully at that point (April ?) it wont break the bank

Still pretty darn expensive considering you can get 2 Velociraptor's for less $.

Raid 5 needs at least 3 drives.

Is it even nessary to have a raid 1 array with these ssd's?
To me it would be a waste of a potential performance increase. Any thing of importance I would just back up to one of my old platter drives.

oops my bad. :respect: I read my raid info incorrectly. Probably do raid 1+0

That would be like using a ferrari to haul your 600lb fire safe around.

which would be sweet! I dunno I have time to think about it... I'm not doing a build until april. And it seems I need to look into RAID more

that price on that SSD won't be down in january that for sure. You may end up with a core series SSD.

matter of fact it's still gonna be a while before ssd prices at 128gb go down at all.

It really all depends on if other companies are going to launch ssd's Q1 09. If Hitachi, Seagate and WD get in on the action I can see prices comming down fast. However I agree it shure as hell won't be january.

This is the way I see SSD's compared to platter drives.

Pro's
SSD

no need to defrag
no mechanical parts
consistant speed
Quiet
No wear
Low access times
Faster read and writes than standard HDD's
Low power consumption

Cons
Cost per gig
New tech could be better
Small selection
Smaller storage space

Average platter drive
Pro's

Low cost per gig
Large selection
available in 1.2TB
Mature technology but also a con

Con's
High access times
constantly needs defragged
has mechanical parts, wears out faster
slower speed as head moves toward outer edge of platter
noisy
Slow reads and writes
high power consumption
Not going to get any faster
