ok to install OS for a prebuilt?

My friend gave me her laptop to clean of viruses. She's had it for a year and a half now, it has vista mixed with an older mobile sempron...obviously bloated with all kinds of crap.

It has a shitload of viruses too, and will not boot short of safe mode. Only antivirus I can use is USB based Clamwin.

Is it possible to just do a format? It's a Compaq F500 btw.

I shall give her what she needs and that's XP, equip her with the basics (firefox, adblock, Office, the free copy of AutoCAD we receive, perhaps a theme pack If I'm feeling nice).

really, it's a laptop for someone that browses the internet, how could XP not work?

If your interested, I drop Ubuntu on old laptops for internet only. It runs uber light and comes installed with browser, driver, open office, and most everything else needed to survive.

there is a partition for compaq recovery.

I would already have done it if it was my computer, but I really can't cock this up, and am extremely paranoid that something will go wrong and I'll be stuck.

pretty sure that most Compaq Persario's use the same drivers for x32 bit XP

well, that's within the same Model # but yeah i woud Assume most would work. the only difference i would think is maybe better RAM, CPU, Onboard GPU, HDD, Etc.
