what would you suggest we use during graphics card reviews to determine fan noise under load and load/load+oc temperatures.

the reason i am asking is that the latest version of furmark generates a ton of heat which seems to be more than you will see in any application in real life

Do you mean a game or application to test out automatic fan noise?

Personally (I've tried GTA4, Crysis etc) but the highest gpu fan speed I get is in Fallout3 inside the Megaton house while I'm facing the robot. He's got this large-ish shimmer radiating from beneath him, as soon as my character looks the other way the fan speed drops but as soon as I face him again the fan speed always goes really high, I'm guessing around 80% though I never really checked.

I'll send you a save game if you need it for testing purposes, just let me know.

Can't you use a program like Rivatuner to turn fan up to 100%? Or CCC/Nvidia Control Panel to control the fan speeds?

That would be best for measurements. Not sure if it would work with the latest VGA's though, could be a road block.

100% fixed fan is completely unrealistic. no app will ever make the fan go as fast. fan noise under load should tell the user the fan noise he can expect during normal usage like gaming and benchmarking

Does vantage not crank the fan up while running? does vantage stress the card enough.

With Fallout 3 at 1920x1080 and AAx4 and AFx15 my gtx 295 the fan is really quiet. The fan design on the gtx 295 moves a ton of air. Much better designed than even the 9800GX2.

I say use Crysis at high res with 4x AA..... I know Crysis is a tired old benchmark but it still stresses cards for one reason or another. Despite the memory leak still in Crysis Warhead.

Furmark is rediculously stressful on cards so I am glad you are not using that. Some OC models of 4850's couldn't complete a full run because of poor cooling designs.... which means its like prime95 on GPU's. ~I am sure you already know that though which is why you started this thread.

I agree crysis not because of play ability but because of the card intensive ness and the heat it will generate. It comes with a bench program though it would probably be better to play.

:banghead: I thought it was futuremark.. sorry about that one.. Crysis bench should be good to use then. How DaedalusHelios puts it.

i did not say "no furmark" i was asking for your thoughts if furmark should be used because it seems to give unrealistically high temperatures. of course furmark is an application like anything else and could be used as a worst case scenario if you people demand it

I normally use ati tool's show 3d view to see how high my cards temps go. Not sure if it gets unrealisticly hot or not hot enough, but worth a suggestion.

Yeah, furmark can be a extreme condition benchmark. But I've found that if you use the stability test for 2 mins, shows the possibility of the highest temps that the card will get. But, I've seen that my temps after the two mins is the same temps I get after playing Fallout 3, Crysis, and others on high for 2 hours...

IMO, a worst case scenario labeled as such is best for reviews. It's better for people to be pleasantly surprised by better performance than disappointed by "OMG WTF IS THIS" crap.

Either this or use Rivatuner and show decibels at different percentages. 40%/60%/80%/100%.

I think you should run Crysis and measure the fan volume and percentage then. And also set the fan to 100% in rivatuner and show that volume too.

idk what to use but i will tell you one thing...

the fan control on the gtx295 is almost dead on i think.

it adjusts its speed very well according to temps unlike any other card i have owned.
