couldnt be more wrong. They are completely different chips, you might be thinking of the GTS. The 8800GTX is G80 core, while the 9800GTX is the G92, just like the 8800GTS 512, which is an underclocked 9800GTX.

He is right.. the G92 series are rebatched G82 cores..

meh, I always thought this card was overpriced even for the performance, I find it not worth the time or energy, even at that time when ATI was sucking wind and not bringing any competition to the table. and now it's going to retire with other famed cards such as the 9800XT, and 7900GTX or 7800GTX can't really remember off the top of my head, etc., etc., etc...

How doesn't he like Nvidia, he listed 1 of each brand as great cards of all time. Saying a videocard is over priced doesn't make anyone a fanboy, $600 is a ton of cash. You can get 2 of the current best GPU's for that price and even on one card.

well said on that last part. I thk the main reason the 8800GTX was just a landmark is cause it was the first card that was King with a revolutionary way to render(SPU's). My bro always saying no new cards are worth it cause they don't jump in performance like 8800GTX did from the 7900GTX, and i don't think we'll see another jump from generation to generation like that for quite a while, probly not until they come up with another way to render things, Pixel pipelines to SPU's made a drastically huge difference and nvidia went 110% when they released it. That's why it's still a great card. Also just for reference the 8800GTX as said does beat hte 9800GTX+ but only at higher resolutions 1920x1080-2560x1600. I agree with what the general opinion is, keep your king it still runs every game out great.

Also I gotta say the 9800's from ATI were probably more ground breaking, that in my mind was the card that really started the competition. A very landmark card.

And ATI is back in the competition. How many of us can buy $500 VGA. I don't think more than 30% of us can jump this. And ATI is keeping its focus on the major segment of the market. An year ago the XFX 8800GTX was at $525 here in PAKISTAN. But i got my HD4850 in last september for just $200 giving almost equal performance for me. Thanks ATI.


And i am not saying i do not like nVidia. nVidia rocks and before my 4850 i used every card from nVIDIA. TNT, TNT2, Quadro, FX5200, 6600LE, 8500GT, 8600GT. And i must say 8 series was a land mark like ATI's 4XXX series. And the last thing is nVIDIA has been better driver support for me than ATI.

However i love my ATI HD4850.

the landmark cards in my experience would be

Geforce DDR (original)
Geforce 4 Ti4200 (cheap, OC'd to the high end of its era with ease)
Radeon 9800 (owned the competition, although not by any ridiculous margins)
8800GTX - absolutely owned the competition and all previous models. basically twice as fast as the previous generation.

Its not that the 8800GTX is such a great card, its more that neither ATI nor nvidia have come up with anything thats such a leap above it. There are faster cards, there are more efficient cards, there are cheaper cards - the thing is, nothings gone out and doubled its performance like the 8800GTX did so some people still have a mentality that its 'just better' when the numbers just dont add up.

if a new card is 10% faster and costs 10% less while using 10% less power - it might be less IMPRESSIVE compared to the generational leap before it, but that doesnt mean its not BETTER.

Well, I had to break out my old 8800 GTX. My five month old EVGA GTX 260 "FTW" died last night (and I didn't even abuse it). While I'm waiting for the RMA I'm using "old faithful". Its still works great. Since I haven't had it in my PC for five months several performance improving driver sets have come out and its running better than ever. I am pleasantly surprised by my two year old card. Really glad I didn't sell it after I got the GTX 260.

My 8800GTX plows through any game I throw at it at 1680x1050 and usually with a lot of eye candy. It also chugs through F@H WU's like no tommorow.. check me out in the F@H team.. I'm like number 22, after like a week of folding.

P.S. If anyone can find me a new or very lightly used, from someone reputable, EVGA 8800GTX, I may be interested in buying it for SLI. It's either than or sell my 8800GTX and get 1.. or 2.. GTX 280's..

Um... It's faster than a 9800GTX+....

Seriously if you have it already, keep it. If your looking at buying a new card, get a 4850.

9800gtx+ is on par with 4850 1GB. Looking at everything except for extremely high AA that doesn't make a game look any better in most modern engines beyond 4AA. Yes I have had both.

A 9800GTX+ < 4850.... 9800GTX doesn't even stand close.

The 8800GTX is not a 9800GTX...

The two are at the same tier and the 9800GTX+ OC's fine where 4850's have some serious issues in that department. 4850's have good ways to deal with high AA but who is really dumb enough to game at 1920x1200 at 12AA or greater. It won't look any different but it will sure kill FPS on both cards(just more so on the Nvidia 9-series).

9800GTX+ does better than the 8800gtx. 8800gtx scales pretty well in SLi though.

You really need to add to that list, the 3870x2. While the singles didn't hold up against the GTX's and faired well against the lower end 8800's. the 3870x2 was a whole different monster. It crushed the benchmarking world and even today is comparable with quiet a bit of cards. The 9800GX2 was suppose to dominate it and it just seem to get pushed aside by an older supposedly weaker card.

8800 GTX is still a great card, Nvidia really out did them selfs with the performance of the card, and has still held strong in most modern games.

Sooner or later yes, the 8800 GTX will only be able to play most games at about mid specs, as way more power cards are being released. But even then, the 8800 GTX will still be able to play games at a good spec, just with more things disabled.
