CPU Temps

Well I see a lot of people asking what safe temperatures for their CPUs are. It would be nice to have a sticky somewhere like the PSU guide as to what CPUs minimum and maximum stock temperatures are. Maybe even have an OC section. It would be nice to have a quick reference.

I often times here about what is a "safe" temperature and for me that is a very subjective question.

Here's my E8400 running Prime 95 Small FFTs for 3 hours while over volted and overclocked with the CPU fan umplugged.

I don't recommend doing this 24/7 but Intel CPUs seem to run happily at pretty much any temperature.

When you are fully overclocked, you're going to have to leave yourself some more head room than that to maintain Prime stability.
For me what is a safe temperature can be summed up like this, "As long as your computer is stable, you don't have to give a second thought to your CPU temperature."

from what i have heard from some intel based sources is the chips are tested to run several years @75C 100% load so i never worry about temps if it runs then its cool by me

but then again i pushed 2v through 4 65nm celerons on water just for the hell of it

That graph is a perfect example of the effectiveness of Intel thermal throttling. It's definitely a good idea to have TM1 and TM2 turned on in the bios. After 3 hours, only one core of this CPU hit 100C and that happened only once. As the temperature hit 98C, thermal throttling would kick in and drop the multiplier down to 6, which cooled off the processor. (Relatively speaking of course!)

Either the CPU Tcase sensor is overly optimistic reporting 107C, or the core temperatures are reading a little on the low side. I trust the core temperature sensors at these temperatures more than Tcase readings that are usually bastardized by the bios.

The multiplier is rapidly cycled a zillion times a second to keep the temperature from getting too out of control. If TM1 and TM2 aren't enabled then it would have gone over 100C. Thermal shut down is at approximately 125C but the most I've ever been able to see is 122C.

Interesting... this is the first time I've seem someone pushing the CPU as high as it can go... and I am truly amazed of how high and hot those go . . .

With this exact same chip on the same board, etc. I ran Prime stable for 9+ hours without any problems at 4050 MHz with the CPU fan on. After I proved that it was nice and stable I decided to pull the heatsink fan to let it warm up and to see what would happen. Core 0 reported an error about 5 minutes later when it reached 77C. (I'll post a SpeedFan graph later of this test.)

With this E8400, at 3600 MHz, core temperature is nothing you have to be concerned with. When you are pushing your chip harder with more MHz, then you are forced to keep it cool or you'll lose Prime stability. These CPUs are limited. They can only take so much abuse before they say, "OK, that's enough!"

100C doesn't seem to hurt them but there's no way you'll get your maximum overclock at that temperature. This E8400 can run perfectly stable at 3600 MHz at this temperature but there's no way it can run stable at 4000 MHz at the same temperature.

That's why I always recommend letting stability be your guide and not core temperature. If you are pushing an Intel chip too hard, it will let you know either by erroring out in Prime or it might re-boot while running Prime. Either way you'll know that you've hit the wall. When you hit the edge of this thermal envelope, you'll either need to back off the MHz or find a way to make your CPU run cooler. Some magic number like 75C or 80C is "bad" is not really true. For me, the only thing that is bad is losing stability.

100% Load @ 75c Intel testing is probably why they dont release CPU's running at 4Ghz stock.
