Socket 1366 air coolers, what to get?

Well hello all! I've been reading up a small bit on air coolers for socket 1366 (i7 920 in my case).
It seems the TRUE and Noctua's coolers do pretty well, as well as the CoolerMaster V8, but I miss coolers from Xigmatek etc. Where are their 1366 solutions?
What are your opinions on the best air coolers for this platform?

I'm looking for something that will cool good and preferrably be pretty silent (which will absolutely be possible when I can replace the fans if the standard fan sucks).

My current solution, the Scythe Shuriken I plucked off my previous 775 setup, gets my 920 at around 70 degrees under full load, 60 when HyperThreading is disabled. That's at stock speed, so I'd like to get a little more headroom to be able to get an overclock going.

Sure, I know, the 920 has a TjMax of 100 degrees, but I'd like to not get too close to that. 70-75 load temps would be the max I want to tolerate. (I might be temp-spoiled with the E6750, which did <60 load at 3,2Ghz )

That's because the pipes don't fully fit on 775. The S1284 is better on i7 and AMD because the IHS is bigger.

Good point there mate. What about the "C" version of the S1284?

I have the 1284EE. Is the C the Achilles one? Either way its a great cooler.

I would tend to agree with this point as it makes logical sense but, clearly there's something more to it as your explanation doesn't hold up in the AMD tests for that cooler.

The heatsink was tested with an AMD IHS sized area and the S1283 still manages to perform better. Granted, the two heatsinks are within a couple of degrees. Still a good cooler though.

Maybe the 120mm fan cant take all the surface area. I have a 140mm blowing into it

I'd take that list with a grain of salt.

That is one of the proven coolers. I would also go with a Xigmatek if there was a 1366 bracket. Noctua and Scythe I wouldn't really put my hopes into, and the Coolmaster V8 is shown to get about 2C worse temps than the 120 extreme.

Only saying that because of what I've heard of 1366 testing. I'm not bashing the companies. I should have made clear which models of coolers I read about. I wouldn't trust my i7 to anything but water... so I am sorry for even posting here.

okay who said one a Scythe anything would beat a TRUE, certainly not me, and two the German review, since I don't read German, I couldn't tell ya about but I can show you about 30+ review that say a NOC 12p doesn't suck.

Please do :waits:. You do know that you tried to defend against my post which bashed these two companies in favor of the Thermalright 120 Extreme, right?

Your comparison is bull because we're talking about i7. The Phenoms don't throw off as much heat, the chip size is very different, and so is the placement of the cores. I'm waiting for your 30xi7 reviews.

I use CoreTemp or RealTemp to check my setup temp, I was just curious how hot a Phenom II at 1.5v compare to Core i7, of course we have to use the same program to make it comparable...

With HT off it's a different story, but if you notice that's not even done the first test.

I'm glad you understand that I'm comparing your temperature results to a watercooled i7 with less voltage and about 11% more frequency with the same test. Clearly you can see that even on water the i7 will get as hot as your 140W TDP chip if not more hot. So keep this related to i7. I don't really mind that you stand by good products, but this thread is made to discuss air products that work the best for the i7. i7... Bob Dole...

Again comparing apples and oranges. The one review you had was solid. It's got me thinking but you're back to trash. The core placement and size are COMPLETELY different.
