btw thxs for the luck on studying :p tpu is a big distraction

tell me what you prefer from that dell and i can almost guarantee i can find something cheaper for about the same things

you do know ppl make rigs out of 450 pounds? some even make make it run crysis smoothly

You're welcome fella :)

TPU is a MASSIVE distraction hehe, but a good one! :)

Hehe, will do matey, although I think I'm settling for the Dell one to be honest, and if you can find similar ones I'd really appreciate that n-ster, I really appreciate the time you've dedicated for me already as with the others, it's great to know there's superb people out in the world :) -- You can use yourself to progress, but a helping hand normally gets you further as they say ;)

Lol, some can yea, but I'm not an experienced overclocker so building a rig for £450 right now to run Crysis smoothly wouldn't be something I would be capable of I guess, I could build one but to do that, but to match that price, I've my own doubts about that :D

but I can't understand WHAT can justify a 300 pound increase in price ... I mean that ASUS has better specs on paper too! (2ms GTG !) especially that you prefer 22" to 24"

ok fine it can go vertical and it has a crazy 110% gamut... but... 300pounds? ok 50~100 pounds for the extra 2 inches...

2ms GTG is very good but I read somewhere that not all 2ms is not "true" 2ms. Either way 2ms will make the screen more responsive, reduces flickering.

I don't think I can say anything to that matey, I don't think anything can justify the £300 increase... I think what I might do is compare the two together properly and look at all the specs together, as you're really making me slide my favouritism over now lol...

I'm not normally so easily swayed by temptation, but you're doing some very fine weaving of words and information, as well as using the price difference to leverage yourself hehe! :rockout:

I'll be off to bed anytime soon to catch some 40 winks lol, so I think the comparing will have to be done tomorrow, but in honesty, I think I'm swaying now on a pedestal! :O

again I said it before... 2ms GTG is equivalent to a 4ms black white black (true response time)... but now 90% of manufacturers use GTG so.... anyhow, at 4ms response time, you can't see a difference from that and a .0000000001 nano second response, your eyes isn't that fast :p

The difference here is screen quality, and display type. The Asus is a TN panel, while the Dell is a PVA panel.

The difference is that, generally, PVAs will get you better color reproduction out of the box. Ideally once calibrated (most people never do) the gains are much more beautiful and noticable.

As a science experiment, if anyone has a good working CRT that is of the last few years of their production. Put them up against one of the cheaper LCD monitors (as the ones ranging from 200-400 are generally all TN). I can guarantee you will see a difference in color off the same feed. It's not just that it isn't calibrated correctly. No matter what you do, blacks will be darker and all other colors seem less washed out.

This is what its like from most PVA panels to most TN panels (not even mentioning IPS to TN). Some of the more expensive TN panels feature some proprietary format, usually called 'overdrive', or 'super awesome dynamic filtering of good!' or something along those lines. This is essentially software modification or tuned performance specs to lessen the gap between TNs and PVAs.

Now that's not saying that TN panels aren't good solutions, because if its all you're looking for, then by all means. I still have my 17" CRT hooked up to my computer (one in specs) because its damn beautiful in games and the like. Its why I'm hoping for an IPS panel, just need to find a place to buy one from that won't kill me.

If anyone remembers how LCD panel TVs looked compared to Plasma when they first came out. Can be along those lines. Don't get me wrong, this ASUS looks like a good quality TN but I can't say anything more or less because I haven't heard anything about this monitor.

very nice explanation... but that is exactly why I would go with the ASUS... I've seen the difference between TN and PVA... but if you calibrate a TN well, it'll probably give a better boost then the PVA will get from calibration... PVA is great for movies though :p

this might help understand PVA israar:
"My main uses are 60%gaming, 30%movies 10%surfing etc...My understanding of TN vs PVA so far is TN is quicker, but has less viewing angle and less colour being 6-bit per channel rather then (PVA) 8-bit. but PVA is suposed to be slower. So I really would like to hear from a gamer who has a newish PVA (or access to test) to hear your thoughts on ghosting in FPS games. "

"If gaming is your priority then get the TN monitor. However, you need to be aware that not all TN panels monitors are the same. Some may have ghosting issues some may not. The same can be said about color uniformity issues, and backlight bleeding amongst other things."

that is from a toms hardware forum...

"1 -If you are a medium to power user which plays games a lot, listen occasionally to movies and surf NCIX products on the web, TN panels from reputable companies (read the reviews) will suit you really well and won't break the bank.

2 -However if you are really picky about viewing angle, color reproduction (lots of HD Movies, Photoshop) and still play games, then you will have to look for PVA/MVA Panels. Please note that these panels have a little slower response time than TN.

Finally, if you are the same as #2 but care less about gaming and you are using your monitor for medical/professional grade use (Full color reproduction, Large RGB Scale), and have 1000$ + to spend on a monitor, look ahead for a S-IPS monitor. "

that was from ncix...

TN FTWW!!!!!

lol its just that if your a 60%+ gaming 30% - movies TN is for YOU

EDIT: My god I persuade well :p

This question may come across as a bit "noobish", but how can you tell which monitors are TN and which are PVA?

Usually you can get a good idea as to price. However this isn't the best method as the high end TNs will mingle with the low end PVAs. TNs are generally not more than $325, PVAs not more than $650 and IPS is everything above. Again, it gets foggy at around these price points due to priced as per quality of monitor.

Best way is to get the model and do as I do, google and skim. Unfortunately its not the best answer but most manufacturers and online retailers don't mention it anywhere, not even on the product specs on the box. Because of this, reviews are the way to go.

There are people around that can look at the specs and tell you exactly which is which, but its not easy. Shallow viewing angles, brightness, contrast ratio and response time (gtg) all are indicators. But even these run together at the ends of the spectrum like price can. Best thing to do is to find a trusty few review sites and search them, or for that matter search hard forums. There are many more monitor enthusiasts there and usually they bandy about most every popular make and model to discuss positives and negatives.

I'm pretty close to choosing the Asus now lol...

As to be fair, the benefits of the USB 2.0 slots would be useful but in the end, the viewing angle and that it's nothing major... As I just tilt the monitor to get a good angle anyway nothing big... So the Asus does sound very very good!

You know this calibration, I've never actually needed to heavily calibrate a monitor, only change the horizontal and vertical settings to get the screen fitting, any chance of a bit of a low down for the calibration you're on about?

I'm about 60-70% gamer, 15% movie watcher, 10% browser/IM/forum dweller and 5% music listener (in this section I do use apps like Photoshop and what not now and again when I'm fiddling about with my crappy skills but all the while this is a rough example of what I'm like when I'm on the comp).

Also itsover65 covered a question for me which I was pondering about myself, cheers dude, saved me asking :)

Bar from the whole fanboy/want of myself to have the Dell 2408WFP, I think I'm slowly (well rapidly) changing my opinion and want for having the Asus over it instead lol, and the price difference is really tickling me too! I think I might end up asking my mate at the comp shop to price the Asus up for me himself and get back to you lot on the price I'd pay if he can get ahold of one :D

I'm just glad I started this thread, otherwise I'd be paying out £400~ haha!

Wll guys, ordered the Asus 22" monitor earlier today, so should have it within the next couple of days hehe! Whoop :D

£155 in total which is not too bad considering the price I'd have been paying lol, so thanks for the suggestions guys and again, can't wait to get some pics up and running :D

Haha, now now don't go giving me bad luck before I even get to see it!

If there happens to be dead pixels, etc... I won't blame you, not like you can do anything towards it to make it bust really, although I may take you up on the offer of you being my scapegoat

Nah only kidding fella ;)

Lol, hate is a word I rarely use as it's a strong one, there's only two things in life I hate and both are breathing unfortunately :shadedshu

Loving your modesty though hehehe! I should like it, I've been digging up pictures and more reviews and to be fair, it looks bloody lovely :)
