Psu for crossfire and core i7

I just acquired a second radeon 4870 card for a crossfire setup.
My psu is a Corsair Hx620 which should be plenty in most cases.
But the things is i have a heavily overclocked core i7, x58 board, 3 hard drives, 8 120mm fans,
a big 250mm SoB fan, cold cathodes, a sound card and a somewhat powerful pump for my cooling system.
I always thought big power supplies where a bit overkill, but now i am wondering....
Will my 620 watt cut it? It look very borderline... Used a psu calculator and it sugested a 660 watt.
What do you guys think of all this? :confused:

You will be fine. Those PSU calculators are BS. The corsair 620w is a solid unit. You really only would need a new power supply if you get quad-fire or something but only because it probably doesn't have the required connectors.

Yeah its a good psu but it get kinda hot from my current setup.

But you also have the high ripple issue when maxing a Corsair unit. IMO, I say go with an 850W just so you know you will have more than enough overhead.

here's an 800w silverstone. single 12v rail and it's even modular. remember, multiple rail power supplies are really just one rail split up into different feeds. one rail might be your mobo power, one rail is molex, one rail is PCI-E etc, which means one rail can be stressing out while the others are next to idle. single rail is always best

I have my eyes on a enermax revolution 85+ 850w and drooling all over the keyboard.
But i temporarily lost my job so this is not a good option for now... :banghead:

I just ordered one a few days ago and will be getting it tomorrow. I'm thinking I'll need another one for a similar setup to what you are planning. I just wouldn't trust my Enermax Liberty 620w to handle a Core i7 and HD4870.

I do not agree. A corsair 620hx will get hot at 90+% load and most likely the spikes ::edit:: across the 12v ::edit:: from the crossfired cards will give instability to the cpu voltage as well. Also if he's running CF 4870s on a high OC he's going to burn that PSU out. I was hitting 90% load with SLI GTX280s and my i7 overclocked on a TX750W and that has a beastly 60amp rail. I just sent in my order for the Enermax 1050W psu at the beginning of the week because they're on sale and cheaper than the Enermax 850W.

Just a reminder... an i7 920 @ 1.39v 4.2ghz draws 300W at 28amps from the PSU across the 12v

Hmm I'm having mixed thoughts about this though. Where did you get this info from?
Odd because while its at full load temps stay under 60C while still maintaining 80% efficiency. Except in one review where they overload (100v) it bringing it down to 76% at 613W.

But in two other reviews temps were adequate.
In a review done by Hardware Secretes they load the PSU up to 740W (so actually its not a 620W but a 740W unit according to them) and temps reached 58C.

It's not temporary load that matters, it is long term. A lot of those calculators overestimate in order to account for the degradation of the power supply in 1-3 years. If you load a 620w PSU with 680w PSU, it isn't very likely to last much more than a month.

Mind you, wattage isn't the most useful number either because it isn't something that is measured consistently industry-wide. For instance, some PSUs in the USA that are rated at 500w may sell at 1000w in Europe. Some of that has to do with the 230v current over there but most of it has to do with marketing. The amps tell the story the watts don't.

Most PSU´s are secured against over voltage and that sorta crap. Well, at least my OCZ ModXStream Pro (700W, 46A on the 12V combined rails) is. I currently have a Phenom 9950 setup with a HD4870X2 and am waiting for the 32nm version of Nahalem.

But also take into account that it is somewhat of a challenge to "fully" load it up to 680W and keep it constant for even a week. Loading up a PSU for a review is one thing but its another thing to keep it constant 24/7.
