use the 8600GTS, It's newer and uses DX10/SM4.0, the X850 it's a dinosaur.

To be frank neither card is good enough, but to answer your question the 8600 GTS 256 MB is better :)

The 8600 GTS is going to be crippled with only 256 MBs of ram, NFS Undercover isn't a well optimised game, I'm pretty sure the game will be a slide show at maximum settings, you'll have to be content with low/medium settings and no AA.

I would advise you to buy a ATI 4830 at minimum if you want to play todays games at high settings, they cost $95.

If you can overclock your AMD x2 4400+ or drop in a cheap AMD 6400+/7750+ that would help too!

Edit:

I agree with wahdangun,

If money is tight get a ATI 4670 or 9600 series. But ideally you need a 4830/9800 GT because they are soo cheap ( best hang for the buck )

i chose 8600 GT but you can't max it with that card, chose HD 4670 if you want at(very efficient and no need external power) or 9600 gso if you want Nvidia( a litle more expensive than hd 4670, and need external power), they cheap right now and peform alot more beter than 8600 GT

and don't ever chose x850 xt it was ancient card and it even doesn't suport SM 3.0( you need at least SM 3.0 to max out modern games including NFS undercover)

need for speed undercover is a really poorly optmized game, with my 8800GS@858/2000 or 9800GTX and my C2D@3.8Ghz, the game still played bad, I say avoid that game, lol

to give you an idea of how bad its optimized, on that system(my backup rig)GRID(ultra with 4aa) mirrors edge(max with 4aa) and crysis(gamer with 2aa) will play on smoothly at 1600x1200, but nfs chucks around at about 28fps @1280x1024 with high settings with no aa.

I's say the 8600, cause mine (8600GT) can play that game at max settings and 1024x768 with 4x AA with no problems. And yes, I have that game.

A regular X850XT can play NFS fine but 8600GTS is much more superior.

i ran this game on a x850xt PE agp..with a 3700+ 754 w/2GB ram and it performed very well in NFSMW ....Average was like 40-60FPS at 1920x1080..game all the way up ...card on Quality ...I still have it too and still works well ...I just upgraded that rig to a 3850 agp and down graded the cpu to a 3200+ ......I never owned a 8600 so I dunno.

8600gt will give you better frames but neither card will produce desired results. I say you go for a new card.

X850XT was great because it trashed 6800 Ultra for the same price, but against 8600GTS - not even close! For that cathegory best bang for buck is X1950 PRO - will outperform the 8600GTS big time.

I can tell you for a fact that the game will be decently playable, but not on max settings. Go with the 8600, the computer shop I work for has a model set up running a Athlon X2 6000+ and the same graphics card and it plays ok. There is a little bit of stuttering here and there though.

1. It didnt trash it, not by a longshot, remember the original competition was the X800, whoch was about on par and all the X850 was, was higher clockspeeds.

also keep in mind the 6800Ultra was first to the market, by a good couple of months as i remember it, and the Ultra Extreme could par our beat your X850.

i know, i did own a 6800Ultra OC AGP, and bench it in my rig against a X850XT (non PE) and it came out on top.

trashed? hardly. competed well with? yes!

and go the 8600GTS, these cards were a little beaut in their day, i had GT's in SLi, awesome tweaking fun.

Comon wolfy, this is old news that all Radeon hi-end cards were better over all GeForce hi-end cards until the release of GeForce 8800.

6800Ultra was a joke for the price, barely 50 MHz DDR3 more on memory and 50 MHz more on core from 6800GT and that's all, X850 cards as i remember were considered supreme over any 6800..
Never heard of 6800 U Extreme.. Anyway if such existed, surely it was weaker than X850XT PE...

The x850xt is only shader model 3 while the 8600GTS is SM 4 and dx10. I think th e8600GT would pretty much rape an x850xt in any modern game, although they were sick cards back in their day.

a very bold statement, choose your words more carefully, that is way too much of a generalization. there you state nvidia never had a card that could beat ATi's top till the 8800, and that's just plain bogus.

this isnt the thread for this discussion, and please dont state everything you say as fact, unless your backing it up with hard evidence.

what ive put to you is that thru an actual expereince of testing a 6800U vs a X850, the 6800 came out on top, that was yearrrrs ago so i dont have the screenie, but at least im offering something up.

in any case im done with this argument in this thread, if you want to talk NV40 vs R420, then make a thread.
