Damn, I was hoping you guys wouldn't suggest the 295. I have the money but it's suppose to be saved for the recession we're in?? I'll see what people say about going for the GTX 295. Thanks!

Replaced my two water-cooled 4870's and there is no comparison.

I voted no, a 9800GX2 -> GTX285 is a very lateral move, your only really looking at improved minimum FPS, nothing else really.

i have a GTX295 also, awesome card, go it bud.

IIRC you will save power (and therefore heat) and have more options for a silent cooler with the GTX285.

Yes, it's a lateral move on performance... but also a stepping stone to SLI another GTX285 at a later point. If you can get good dollar for the 9800x2, sell it sooner rather than later. The 285 will hold value longer than the 9800 series.

I voted yes as I have recently switched out my 9800GX2 for a XFX GTX285 and have no complaints......bench's a "little" lower than my 9800GX2...but it is smoother In games due to the higher bandwidth....plus it's a newer core architecture so it's longevity is assured over the GX2's.

Equal YES's and NO's which is why I'm still torn...Maybe I should have asked 285 or 295? ahah

I like the AC Xtreme GTX 280 cooler, I think it's the best looking cooler ever. Too bad they don't have a 3rd party cooler for the 295, or am I wrong?

3rd party coolers for the 295 are probably gonna be almost nonexistant like they are for the gx2 because of the dual card lay-out. Only thing available for the gx2 is waterblocks unless you wanna try modding coolers like this-

CustomPC dont use anything below an i7 setup to test cards from the 4870X2 / 295 and upwards. Seems logical to me.

I wouldnt necessarily call it a bottleneck, more of CPU scaling. He will get a relative performance boost. Either way, when he upgrades his CPU in the future, he will be more than covered in the GPU market for years to come.

oh you would be very correct it wont perform as well, and i agree anything under an i7 and pci-e 2.0 will hold this card back.

my point is that you can game and game well still on a dated system, when it comes to max details, @ 1680x1050+ with AA, your starting to look less and less at CPU power anyway.

i saw a great review a while back that was CPU vs GPU in modern gaming, the consensus was that the GPU was far more worthwhile to upgrade, especially if you game at GPU limited resolutions. i cant remember for the life of me where it was, techarp or something.

Of course a better CPU always means better performance, regardless of the setup. An I7 at 4.5GHZ with an old 7900gs could max out crysis at 1920x1200 im sure.

you can get more life out of a card by buying higher up, for instance a GTX295 will have more longevity than a GTX285 you would hope. as it will keep putting out playable FPS when the GTX285 is falling back.

I plan on mine keeping me happy for this year, but if GT212 rocks the house or GT300 lands early, guess what baby
