Core i7 920 vs 940

What exactly are the differences between the 920 and 940? I mean, I understand that the Extreme Edition has an unlocked multiplier, or something like that.

Hell, what are the differences between all 3 of them? (Mainly the 920 vs 940 and 920+940 vs Extreme.)

All that's different is megahertz. The EE is a 920 with unlocked multi, and it's not worth the $700 premium, according to the last Newegg review I read.

the core i7 940 is identical to the 920 except it is clocked at 2.93ghz opposed to the 920 which is at 2.66 I believe. Most 920's overclock as well as 940's at a fraction of the price.

Right, I forgot to ask; if both were to be overclocked using the same system, which would yield better results, the 920 or 940?

940 has higher multi but has the same limits so therefore its really not any better.

IF you have LN2/DICE/phase you can POSSIBLY OC to around 4.8ghz but thats rare... very rare.

the 965xe OCs better only because you can set the multi to any you wish however even that is kinda bugged. only certain multi's allow for stable OC's.

overall, the 920 is the BEST chip to get unless you have extreme cooling. then go for a 965. the 940 is kinda a waste.... well.. more like a total waste.

Two days ago, I was given the option of building a computer now with a $1000 budget, or waiting a month or two and getting $2000-$2500. I don't need the computer now, so I chose to wait. (I have a 200+ reply thread in the System Builder's subforum.) I plan on building my computer using an i7, and maybe some water cooling. (I've never even built a computer before, but I'm VERY interested in water cooling.)

I just hope the prices will go down around summer vacation, so I can focus entirely on putting together a very good gaming rig.
