Have you installed the drivers? Also make sure the device is in device manager I've seen onboard nic's not show sometimes and you have to scan for new hardware then install the drivers.

check your firewall, make sure your not connected and getting limited connectivity, reset your router while its plugged into your notebook, try repairing your network while it hooked up,
