Looking/testing for best antivirus

I want to find the best antivirus and thought that you could help

Norton - crap, not even trying

KIS 2009 - good

Eset Smart Security 4 - just installed it

AVG - too much false alarms



what do you think about AVAST free edition? Is it better than KIS/Eset and also which one would you preefer for gaming from the 3?


EDIT: Looking for good protection, not too harsh on resources and not messing around causing lag in games

Statistically Norton isn't crap at all. It's nice of you to blindly bash it but tests have shown it does detect more than the average. The applications itself on the other hand, not my thing

Personally I like F-secure, specially older versions.

Well, not crap, i just had a terrible experience in the past dont even wanna put it in. I also have a MSI Wind Laptop with that thing in (it came pre installed, and it's not that bad but dont really like it)

So you say you're looking for the best, apparently detection isn't your priority. Perhaps you should share the things you like and don't like about certain products so we have an idea of what could be the best for you.

I find McAfee Enterprise 8.7i to be an excellent, albeit somewhat expensive and resource hogging, anti-virus. There are all sorts of lock down features, and detailed policy management, although somewhat complicated to learn how to use.

It has trapped every blxxdy virus that people bring in on their blxxdy keysticks.

The only virus I have had on a PC is when the AV was turned off.

I'm an Avast! fan. Been using it for 1.5 years & no virus yet. I've had it go off maybe 5 times warning me of a virus before anything got installed, 3 were e-mail attatchments & 2 were web sites IIRC.
They have a free version. I'm using the package deal 8 computers plus WHS for $80/yr.

I liked NOD32 (ESET) before version 3.0... I think the 3.0 interface turned it too much into a Norton type of deal. If you can get your hands on 2.7, it's very low resource hog, excellent detection, simple and clean interface.

I am a huge version of NOD32... I run the 2.xx versions. I personally love it as it takes no resources, and catches EVERYTHING.

OK thanks, I'll stay with NOD V4 for now, there are 2 processes of it one is "egui.exe" (ESET GUI) takes 2.648K in task manager ( that is 2648kb right?) and there is "ekrn.exe" (ESET Service) and uses 41.092K acording to it.

Indeed, Norton isn't crap at it's detection rate... It's pretty heavy on resources and I hate it's interface, so I would NEVER buy it, but it's not crap really..

This whole AV discussion is such a grand endless discussion..

I personally use Nod32 and blackice, along with various things disabled in my browsers.
I never have virus issues.

There are good reviews and tests on antivirus programs that are easy to find all over the net, there is a list of good ones, but they very, one is better than one at one thing while worse in another. So you really kinda end up getting what you want in the end, taking a few opinions.

I have had great luck with-
Kaspersky, NOD32, and Avira.

Free ones, I have used AVG and AVAST, which neither I found to be bad, especially for free.

Not much is it.

If you wanna get technical it would be approx 2MB and 41MB respectively. Its nothing really.

I like NOD because it has native x64 support. Its not THE reason I use it but its a major plus for me.

eh, i've had NOD32 and avira, in full honesty even though Avira is free, i prefer it and trust it, i've used it for almost 2 years now after a month in there of NOD32. I got a virus when i had NOD32 installed, didn't do anything different from what i did the year before with Avira. Plus Avira is free. I'm all Avira especially in comparison to Avast and AVG

NOD has always warned me of the threat and stopped it before it got in my system.

Nod32 and Kaspersky are by far one of the best anti-virus. Very secure, does not take up alot of resources, user friendly... You will never notice them running or bothering you with warnings, but they are very secure about everything

NOD has my vote and I've tried to many to name. http://www.av-comparatives.org/ is a great site for help in determining what is the best A/V in terms of effectiveness. Only downside is that it hasn't been updated in a while.

a simple google of "best antivirus 2009" comes up with plenty of links, i thk the first or second one listed the top 20 according to tested results. Bit Defender is on top with kasperky rigth behind it, i thk NOD32 was like 6th. haha norton all the way 13th or 14th

I use NOD32 V3 myself and i'm quite satisfied.

I use to have Norton since version 1.0 until 2003 (last one before activation). I agree that 2004-2008 were letdowns but i heard some good things about the latest Norton 2009 gaming edition.

Actually if you know 'which' sites to browse you can install any antivirus, what i mean is if you dont go to unsafe sites - like porn sites, crack/keygen/serial sites and so on you cant get a virus that easy.
I tried Avast but it gives many false alarms, tried kaspersky but i didnt like it (where it downloads the definition updates - C: {the definitions were big amount of files and size}, whereas the program files were in E. So i tried NOD32 and i dont have any problems for now, i use version 4 because i think its better than version 3.
If you dont like Norton try Symantec AntiVirus its used by many big corporations

Norton for home use I'm not a big fan of. The corporate edition is what I use and I believe it work's very well. Not bad on resources and it only installs a single client not that shitty control panel.

KIS (Kaspersky)- I have had SO many issues with KIS, if it's on an older machine, it can cause the machine to run extremely slow, making start-up/scanning slow. Had a horrible time with this. And on newer machines I've had issue's with other AV programs that were removed it got confused and bogged the machine down until i removed the program. Maybe it's the instances I've had but i can't stand it. Detection is good, removal good, but interaction with the OS.. not a fan.

AVG- LOTS of false readings..ever since AVG 8.0...7 Series was good.

Avira- Had some good luck with this one so far, except for the random BUY ME pop-up..big nuisance.

Norton- Been using Symantec norton AV corp for ever now. Never once had a problem with detection, and or removal.

There is no AV that is just plain out the box better than all others. A lot of it is user preference. And virus removal's come down to using all the tool's at your disposal. From AV to Antispyware, Combofix, whatever it may be.

Avira gets my vote. Great detection and nice interface.

NOD32 - crappy detection rate. Never got one alert in the year I used it (which is bull).

Avast - nice software, good detection, bad interface.

KIS - messes too much with the OS, but decent detection rates.

And to all who say Norton and Mcafee are above average... average of what? No other popular antivirus has shittier detection, interfacing, or resource usage.

Norton is crap... It's bloated as all get out and is incredibly intrusive. So is McAfee, also their like Windows, their the big dogs who most uneducated people use and therefore hackers give them more attention.

I'm personally relatively fond of AVG and Avast but I prefer Avast for one simple reason. Avast can do boot-time scans, AVG can't.
