Xeon vs Regular intel processors

So i recently acquired a Xeon 3110 through a trade, but i also an have an E8400

now basically both are exactly the same specs as the Xeon 3110 is a server grade CPU but im left wondering, is it better then the E8400? one thing i can already tell is that it uses way less volts. I have it running 4.0Ghz with 1.28v right now.

I do game a lot so does it affect performance? compared to regular E8400

xeons are hand picked, and tested for longer. They tend to OC higher, at lower volts - but at heart they're the same chips.

If you didn't mind the voltages and temps were ok on the e8400 you're wasting your time and money keeping the xeon. If you want lower volts and temps at the same OC as you've stated then keep it, gaming-wise, no difference.

Also Xeon's tend to be able to handle more heat, witch also increases OCing potential.

With some of the newer ones they also have some technologies built into them their standard counterparts do not have.

I bought my Xeon new for $140 last month, but that's in asia. You'd be looking at selling it for about the same amount if your in the states.

I would agree here if the plans were to keep the chip in the long term and possible higher overclocks desired. If gaming is a priority, no difference will be noticed between the two at 4GHz, and having sold an e8600 capable of 4.5 on air 24/7 stable, no difference with gaming at that level of OC either. It depends on what the priorities are as no doubt that xeon is a damn good chip, but if the e8400 get's the job done just fine, sell the xeon...or the other way around. Either way Xazax you won't lose, it just depends on what you want with what you have and what you want out of a possible sale.

The E3110's will also do 4.5ghz on air if you have a decent enough cooler. Mines pretty stable at that speed but the chip starts to push for 90c.

Test your, see what overclock you can get out of it and then you'll be abe to figure out a price. Also check the Stepping, you want E0.

The whole temperature thing is just a myth as far as I can tell. I've never seen any numbers of Xeons surviving temperatures where their desktop counterparts did not. Sure they are the better chips in a wafer and therefor probably overclock better on average but apart from that they're identical chips as far as design goes. Even the 5 series are still the same chip basically. Nehalem EP on the other hand is different due to the added CSI link. Though apart from that, the architectures are identical with every generation. There is added cache in some generations, FSB is different but overall it's the platform (ie chipset, memory subsystem, etc) that made them different. Most notably multi socket configurations, which doesn't apply to the 3000 series.

only reason i bought a xeon was the fact that they are $80usd cheaper than E8400 here. but it's nice to underclock sometimes and run at the lowest possible voltage setting.
