Mozilla Attempts 3D-accelerated Browsing

Mozilla will chair the initiative to come up with an open standard for 3D graphics on the Web. At the moment, several ideas are being considered, including OpenGL and OpenGL ES 2.0 to enable a 3D world within a browser window.

The 3D capabilities will be integrated in ECMAScript and run in a browser window without the need of a plug-in. JavaScript and Jscript are compatible with ECMAScript, but include features that are not supported by ECMAScript.

Almost all web-browsers have been improving their JavaScript acceleration, which Microsoft has ignored for the most part. If the 3D capabilities are implemented in the form of ECMAScript, Microsoft may have quite a problem on its hands.

Nice. This is an excellent idea. Find more ways to use the hardware we have now, especially the GPU which sits idle for the most part. If it can help with web video decoding great. I'm all for it.

Of course it takes a company like Mozilla to be creative in this fashion. Meanwhile Internet Exploder continues to flounder.

I like the idea. I'm sure that this feature will be optional, so there really is no downside to them releasing it. I'd get some more use out of my gpu.

ECMAscript's just the basis for all web browser programming. You'd have to integrate it into that if you seriously want anybody to start using it.

I really don't see Microsoft having a problem with this, unfortunately -- whatever they don't use, doesn't get adopted. Sad but true.

This could catch on in the mobile market, though, where Microsoft is kinda playing second fiddle.

There surely is great potential here. This must be the future, yes?

It's been in movies for years now, networks rendered in three dimensions. Now imagine visiting your favourite online retailer, and them having the ability to lay out their website in 3 dimensions. They could make it like an actual store. Rather than clicking through menus to get to the section you want, you literally run over there - like in a FPS. As you add items to your trolley they actually add them to the trolley your pushing around in front of you. Brilliant.

I'm getting excited just thinking about it.

Amazon would be like a shopping centre with different stores. eBay would be like a Moroccan flea-market.
