Should I Buy A XFX GTS 250 512MB GFX Card? (£99!)

My current card is the Nvidia 8800 GT Alpha Dog... I was just looking around at online stores and OMFG an XFX GTS 250 512MB at £99... Its only £30 more than the current card I brought, is there any difference in performance wise? And why is it soooooooo cheap? :S

No point IMO. A GTS 250 is just a renamed 9800GTX, which is just a 9800GT with a couple of extra cores, and a 9800GT is just a renamed 8800GT :)

I would say wait due to the minor jump in performance, upgrade to a 260 would be worth it if you can find a decent price.

EVGA, 10 yr warranty and their RMA process is much, much better than XFX.

Plus it seems to me, that EVGA apply their TIM correctly, I have really good temps on the stock cooler.

And yes a GTX260 is a considerable jump, Kyle2020 made the same jump from an 8800GT to a GTX 260.

It's a worthwhile jump for the price, yes.

EVGA or XFX, doesn't matter, they're about the same in reputation/quality.

Yep, but at the same time it depends on the budget, so I posted both, I have been able to OC my EVGA GTX260 a lot, so it negates the extra SP's I dont have. Unless you were able to get a 216SP to the same clocks. :)

The GTS 512 MB have a bad stigma, I doubt you'll find a single review on the 512 MB version, know one wants to touch it because its a 9800 GTX+ in a different box. However the 1 GB version has proven itself to be competitive performance wise, a lot of reviews show it competing with the ATI 4850.
In the UK the cheapest 1 GB GTS 250 is around £130, which isn't an attractive price.

Ebuyer.co.uk are selling the ATI ASUS 4850 for £109.99 free delivery (at your price point it is your best bet)

Dont expect a huge performance increase unless you are aiming for the ATI 4870 or GTX260 (216 core) level of cards, however its still an improvement.

XFX 4830 can be had for £74.99 on ebuyer, I purchssed one yeterday.

They are equivalent in performance to the GTS250 512MB/9800GT

and can overclock really well, can easily match the 4850 with a little overclock.

Weathers not bad here in the midlands neither!

Yeah I went from my EN8800GT TOP to this 260 and was blown away.

In hindsight, however, just due to the options for aftermarket cooling and how much cheaper they are, id recommend a 4850.

hurray for the UK weather at the moment! also i have a 4850 and have had no problems with it - although it does lack somewhat in PPD for folding so i have turned it off for the time being until i get a better and consistent Internet connection (my provider is fine - just need a better internet card) as i have proved that it is a weak link.

on topic - the 250 is a nice card - but it does all depend what you will be using it for. At £99 i would consider it.

I checked some reviews here at TPU. the GTS 250 seems to have an average 25% performance increase over the 9800gt ( so lets say 26% increase over the 8800gt :p ), and the gtx 260 216 has about 55% performance increase over the 8800gt. I'd go for 260 when the price is right :)...

Just go and buy a GTS 250 512mb and get it done with. dont listen to the people who tells you to buy a 260 or 4870. they are overpriced. I bought a GTS 250 512mb and cant be anymore happier.

I overclocked it to 1410mhz memory, 810mhz core and 1960mhz shader. they are great overclockers and blows a 4850 out of the water with these clocks. also if u overclock it like this heavily it will be 40% faster than a 9800gt and almost close to a 4870 or atleast will be in the 4870 territory in terms of performance.

I can now play all the new games smoothly on very high settings including Crysis and far cry 2 smoothly :).

a GTS 250 should be named the best card for the money of the year.
