Yep, at default many are set around 40% and wont' go further till around 90-100C factory. You can modify the bios for this (see original post), or you can use a program like EVGA Precision or Rivatuner (same guy makes both) to adjust fan speeds manually. I recommend Precision because it's simple, easy to use and understand.

Nice man, well check out this next screen, part of it is for you for an idea of an oc, I have yet to see any GTX260 NOT attain these OC's...this is pretty much guarenteed. I've OC'd about 10 GTX260's to this for a stable 24/7OC, though I do recommend a minimum 64% fan speed adjustment either by EVGA Precision or bios modifacation (I only do bios mods on my personal cards though). Just leave the shaders linked, increase to 666, increasing the memory is optional, but it's capable of more on many cards...a lot of guys can hit 1250+ on memory...though that's pushing it imo. Memory can create quite a bit of heat on these cards.

The second part (sensors tab) is for OnBoard, my 2d idle clocks at 1.05v seems to load at about 8.7A on single display, not 7.3A like you get with a single display...dunno why...

Probably the fan speed being not 40%? Don't know if it affects, but still quite interesting that more on lower voltage?

That is soo f!@#king true! Hell I don't even know why they even released the voltage tuner separately, I think when it was released , it would have been alot better to have it embedded in a update for Precision just the way you said it! :rockout:

Well 3D idle is around 15.2A for my card at it's OC'd clocks, dunno what happened, but now I'm back to only having 2D idle on a fresh restart, I wonder if when transferring all my stuff to my new raid 0 had something to do with it. I have reinstalled drivers and no change...back to square one there lol. I can't complain tho, like I said before the card is always working. Still interesting that it was working ok for a little bit there though...but I can't duplicate it again at this point in time...maybe I'll go back to the 182.46 beta's...that's when I started to notice it was working again.

Edit: After about 10 minutes amperage load dropped to about 13.1A, still in 3D idle.

I'm hoping they already have it planned and are just having issues with driver support so they don't want to integrate it quite yet. But definately posting in support of it over there is a good idea.

Well, update on my dead gtx280, did a bunch of research and found my vrm temps were ok, which is what I thought killed it. So now I have no idea why it died! Hope Palit sends me my replacement soon. The only thing I did notice was the standard draw for a 280 under load from the vrms was 70a, mine was over 100..

what do you guys think is the best driver for the GTX 260's? I heard the 180.48 was, but that one was released in late Nov. of 2008... what is your thoughts..?

At what point have you guys had to up the voltages on the 280's? I had my core at 700mhz with the sharder synced and memory up to 1215 and it started artifacting like a mofo. 80mhz just doesn't seem like that high of an o/c when the stock on my 280 is 620..

180.48 is definately one of the most solid driver releases I've used with my 260. 182.08 was also pretty good, I'm still not sure about the newer 182.50's yet...but I'm still running them atm. I keep 180.48 as a fallback driver though, it is defiantely one of the better driver releases overall.

I seem to be having issues, I got home from work today...walked into my office and I heard my GPU fan going from low speed to full spead and back down and up, over and over...I was like wtf. All it was doing was folding all day. Granted it was about 30F warmer outside than a couple days ago and about 5F warmer inside, not enough to justify this shit. I've stood up for these cards being pretty tough, and I question if mine is failing or not now...

I look at GPU-z and the first thing I notice is my temps are a tad higher than normal and my ambient temps are rediculously higher than normal by around 30C! Well, I think...hey maybe it's the 182.50whql's so I revert to the 182.08whql's...same temps. Just take a look at this screenshot...what do you guys think? Is it going tits up? I've started a thread on EVGA forums, but I might file for RMA at this point...I have advanced RMA so hopefully I can luck out and have one sent to me right away.

Edit: Well I shut down, reseated the card, no dice, cleaned and re-installed 182.08 drivers, and so far so good...must've been a glitch of some sort...whew. Now at idle (I have 2d idle in these drivers till I load anything like F@H or 3d...) ambient and pcb temps are 36c like normal, gpu temp at 40c, vrm's around 36c...this is at my normal OC'd speeds with a 71% fan speed...thank god! :rockout:

I'm back in the club for a third time! Just ordered a Palit GTX275 (providing of course a 275 will get me past the bouncer on the door) to play with, it has aftermarket cooling fitted as stock which was what appealed to me, this HD4870x2 is a fine card but the cooler is like a friggin vacum cleaner, I got sick of the noise to be honest. I might get a 2nd 275 for my birthday in a couple of months :rockout:

That looks like rip-out-the-orginal-fans-and-stick-a-12cm-over-it kinda thing

Really like the memory+NVIO sink and GPU sink looks a lot like Thermaltake.

Nice, I've read a lot of good about GTX275's...I'm very tempted to get one, but I think I'd rather get a higher res monitor first...and at that, I'm saving my money atm. Dunno when the in-flow may stop...

But on a plus note, after I got my ambient and PCB temps sorted out, I decided to play with EVGA's GVT...at my standard OC I can run solid in Furmark and have let this card fold for the past 18 hours+ on .988v!!! I don't know what made me want to try undervolting, but I was like hey..give it a shot. I gotta say I'm damn impressed at how low I was able to achieve. Stock voltages for this 65nm 216 core card is 1.0625v for Extra/3d and 1.0500v for 2d/idle. Dropping to .988v dropped amperage load some, dropped temps a few degrees as expected. But what just kills me is that I was able to keep my current OC with complete stability.

Here's a couple screens, I dropped the fan speed to 64% so temps aren't amazingly cool, but my rig is less noisy!

Anyone else tried to see how low of voltages they need with an OC? I'm sure others have, and maybe I read over them in this thread, if so I apologize, but I feel pretty good with my findings. And I bet the newer 55nm 260's and even the 275's might have more potential, hell maybe even 280's to an extent, lower temps and amperage peaks might help? Who knows! Maybe a new thread can be started to keep track if enough epople get involved.

It's pretty similar to that 260 sonic you have linked, maybe the same.... this is the actual card that should arrive today..... I also like Palit for the fact that they have the extra power phase which adds to stability when overclocking/overvolting, I just need to find out if that Rivatuner Voltage editor will work with this card

Also, in the UK, these cards are cheaper than the HD4890 and in many cases cheaper than the GTX260 216.

Do it, I have never worried about flashing my gfx card BIOS, I have my highest OC as permanent 3d clocks, and thanks to a bit of fan tweaking it doesnt go above 68*C on Auto

You can always flash back if it goes wrong.

I found it funny that GTA IV acted as more of a stress test than anything else I threw at it tho. :laugh:

Oh it comes with PWM fan plug, nice. Palit has had a habit of using 3pin or even 2pin full speed fans before. Should be quiet enough even if fan control won't be possible.

Reason I hesitate on the card.. My 3870 was the card that was "praticed" on for the Volt mods. Both Pencil and Hard.. Well, he forgot it was bios flashed to XXXX/XXXX clocks... So, when he did the hard mod.. boom.. Card was dead.. Dang man!!! lol

Damn. I flashed my 3870 to a Turbo version. I would never do hard mods only soft mods. Modded my GTX 260 for better fan setup, 1.18v and permanent 3d clocks.

Afaik it is a cheaper PCB than the GTX 260 and GTX 280, and as such doesnt have the same voltage controller, therefore no soft mods

Thats why EVGA Voltage Tuner only supports the GTX 260 and GTX 280.

Yeah, I think it's the same with the 285, I might get lucky and simply have a higher voltage option already set in the voltage table, much like the 1.18V mod for the 260..... apart from that I will have to live with what I have got.
