Aftermarket cooler for HD4870 !?

I would really lilke to know, (based on your personal experience, as well as any reviews you could direct me to), which aftermarket cooler is best for the 4870 512mb ...

I especially appreciate it, if you guys could throw in a GPUZ sensor screener, so that I can check all temperatures.

accelero S1 works, just that whatever you get make sure it cools the VRM's.

Good coolers like the VF900 dont work, because they dont cool the VRM's well enough.

no idea about the t-rad 2, as for crossfire its possible - you just break/cut a fin or two that gets in the way.

U can also try the SCYTHE MUSHASI!I have it and its great.Keeps my vmod 4850 really cool.Check my specs!
As for CROSSFIRE it only occupies 1 slot so it will have no difference with your stock cooler.
Its really silent and has EVERY possible heatsink for the VRM!!!

Have you tried just changing out the thermal paste with some Arctic Cooling MX-2 or AS5? That can make a tremendous difference in temps. Also if you don't mind a little more noise swapping the fan out for something than can push alot more air.

I'm trying to find THIN 3rd party cards... in order to use my PCI slots, i need a cooler as thin as the stock cooler (of my powercolors, not sure how they compare to reference) but the fan has to be located near the rear, not in the bloody middle.

If i use a PCI card where the fan is now, the fan on the card is literally sucking air off the PCI card.

That is exactly why I had to get rid of my X-fi Titanium cause the top card was just suckin air off the back of it and I never so lower than 51 Celcius, now running 43 Celcius at idle.

Since I let it go I think I'm going to get the Azuntech Forte since it has a HTPC design to the card, and supposedly better sound quality.

I am running a crossfire and just for an experiment I changed the bottom cards' thermal paste with AS5... the gpu temp used to be 48C (idle) - 56 C (load), now it is 44C (idle) - 55C (load)
The top card is warmer than that....54C (idle) - 62 C (load), probably cause it sucks hot air from the bottom card... :banghead:

I just want to play around modding both cards to see how low can the temps get!

Actually, I have the 512mb version of the Toxic.... and I am not sure I will get a lot better results using another cooler or by modding the vapor-x cooler of the Toxics....

I was hoping for some 4870 temp readings (GPUZ) for specific aftermarket coolers, so that I could decide which cooler to buy and eventually Mod!

I can heartily recommend the AC Twin Turbo, works like a charm, as long as you use something to tape the vrm heatsinks in place, the stock stuff can get a bit loose.

Sorry can't get you any screens, because my card got f'd up and is heading for RMA.

As for x-fire, if you have two slots between the pci-e slots, its fine.

I know

My problem was, messed up the vrm heatsink installation, one of them dropped, and I think that caused it to die. Now I ordered some Zalman sinks to go on top of them, once I get it back. Vrm temps are about 80-90c on load with this one, idles at core 36c, dispio 36c, memio 43c, shader 40c vrm's 65c. This at 40% fan, at load, mine crancs to 60% and still can't hear it. Load temps are good.

This for starters. A good cooler, if you don't do like me

You have to clean the ram & vrm's with high% alcool before sticking the heatsinks. Mine did not fall off.

True, I only rubbed with an eraser as said in the manual. The ram sinks held just fine, but the vrm's less well. Oh well, we'll see what the RMA people say.

From expericence:

I ran my ATi 4870 512MB Asus with a T-Rad2 and 2 Zalman silent 92mm Fans. The fans where always on low.

Temps: On low
Idle : 23c
Load : 35c (Stalker CS, Max settings)

It is less than 2 slot solution!
