I want to make my own mouse pad.

Mine is not quite a "block" of wood.

I cut a piece of 3/8 sheet of russian plywood 12 X 16 inches. Rounded the edges. Stuck a piece of "dark marble design" Arborite (Counter top) on top of it and used a router for finishing.

I like a big sturdy mouse mat that i can put on my lap while gaming. I find it more relaxing. The "marble pattern" is very mouse friendly too.

I use one of those rubber bar mats. Stole it from a bar. I should have another somewhere but I can't find it. Either way, those things aren't bad as mouse pads.

Uh, what kind of mouse is it? Ball, optical, or laser? What model of mouse?

No good mouse needs a mouse pad. In fact, pads are a nucience (get dirty, slide, mouse falls off, etc.). We got optical mice to get rid of the mouse pad. XD

You only need a mouse pad if the cursor randomly jumps to an edge of the screen, doesn't move as you expect it to, or moves without moving the mouse. Cheap optical mice often don't work well without a mouse pad. Generally, it's better to upgrade the mouse than get a mouse pad.

its going to be a laser mouse soon, im actually just sick and tired of the dirt buildup on the desk, my current mouse doesnt like this at all

we arent talking about tracking. mousepads are used to reduce surface friction. you can tap my mouse gently with a pencil, and watch it slide right off the mousepad.

Quite often new mice can do this too, until the rough surface of most desks eats the feet right off your mouse.

I used a square sheet of closed cell neoprene foam, topped with a peice of cloth; but the cloth weave is a little to coarse for my current laser mouse. I was thinking of using a microfiber t-shirt as the next cover material.

its going to be a laser mouse soon, im actually just sick and tired of the dirt buildup on the desk, my current mouse doesnt like this at all

May I suggest wiping the desk off once a day? Mouse pad or not, junk from your hands will transfer to whatever your hand is above and then the mouse will pick it up as it passes by. Even washing your hands (I mean scrub too--get the dead skin cells off) before using the computer could greatly reduce it.

There are plenty of surfaces where mice don't work correctly. That's where the pad comes in.

I haven't used a mouse pad since laser mouses came out, I remember trying to use the old ball mouse without one then the ball gets dirty and nasty and bought one though, maybe you would need one if your table was glass though

Try using a piece of coarse fir`mica~its what they use for counter tops/cabinets and you can get it in any size you need and it comes in a ton of different patterns and colors. When I bought my first laser mouse.. i had a glass desk and the mouse wouldn't track for shit. So thats what I ended up using.. got it off a job site..lol
