Where did you make a new account? At IGN (Gamespy) or in Wars itself?

I had the same problem when I first got Wars installed.

Try this. I'm not sure if you have or not but make sure you can log into the Gamespy/IGN website and then once you can, logout, start Wars, and instead of entering your login info and trying to login on the Gamespy ID login, click NEW ACCOUNT. I betcha that'll work....and if it does, let me know, I'll join you for a bit of TIA action!! :p

I already had my account at IGN/Gamespy but I tried logging in with the nickname and password and says login failed - make sure nick and password are entered correctly or something (!?!)

So:

1. Log in on IGN
2. Log out of IGN
3. Start Wars
4. Click new account in Wars

?

You need to create the account in Crysis Wars itself that matches all your info (including e-mail address you use at Gamespy/IGN. When you click on "New Account" instead of "Login" it will show you this:

You're not actually creating a new Gamespy ID/Account, you're creating your existing Gamespy ID/Account to be stored in Crysis wars that will authenticate against your info on the Gamespy/IGN servers.

You need to login this way for the first time. Even if you have an existing Gamespy ID it will not log you in regular...Just like if your friend came to your house and wanted to play wars on your computer, regular login wouldn't work for him even if it works on his computer for wars. He would have to click "New Account" to create his valid ID in wars on your computer, you follow?
