I just did a configuration for a good fella and i wondering about the GPU that will go in his rig...
I have 3 options here:
1. MSI GTX275 OC 896MB 448-bit
2. Asus HD4890 TOP 1024Mb 256-bit
3. Sapphire HD4850X2 2048Mb 2x256-bit

The prices is the same aprox. 300 USD... so the price tag is not an issue...

The rest of the hardware it will be:
1. CPU - AMD Phenom II X3 720
2. MB - Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P AM3
3. Mem - Corsair 2x2Gb DDR3 1333Mhz Cl9
4. HDD - WD 1Tb Caviar Green sata2 32Mb
5. Case - Cooler Master CM 690
6. PSU - Cooler Master Real Power M620 - 620W
7. Optical - LiteOn DH-4O1S-11C BluRay
8. LCD - Samsung 2233SN 22" FullHD
9. Mouse + KeyB - Logitech Pro 2800 Cordless Desktop

I personally would go with the 4850X2... So tell me what you think... THANKS

I think 300 bucks is enough for a videocard and BTW it's not for me.... and if you really OC the GTX275 pretty well i think it would compete with the GTX285 :D

Get the 275. And get an ASUS 750A board with it for SLI ;)

I would get the 275. The 4850x2 apparantly has lackluster driver support and the 4890 is a deactivated item :p

Nah the 4850X2 has great driver support, but the 275 is a stronger single GPU.

I would advise to check again whether you REALLY want this item:

4. HDD - WD 1Tb Caviar Green sata2 32Mb

See here http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=90510&highlight=hdd+clunk

I have that drive and it is the WORST purchase decision I have made in the last 5 years.

I don't have that with either of my 2 WD10EADS drives. That being said, it's an excellent efficient, cool, quiet drive to use for storage. I wouldn't recommend it for use as a main OS drive due to its slower speeds and 5400rpm. For an OS drive, I suggest the WD1001FALS.

As for the video card, I think the GTX 275 and ASUS 4890 TOP are the best bang for the buck.

I would suggest something different:

1x ATI 4770

Why? Low power, quiet, probably enough power for a 1920x1080 screen for most situations. You save him $200 right there.

And if he ISNT satisfied with the performance, then you can CF to a second 4770 and still be cheaper and lower power than the other options you proposed while offering outstanding performance.

If the user was 1920x1200 or higher, then I would go > 1GB memory on the GPU and would drop the 4770s. I might even prefer a GTX 260/216/55nm 1700MB over the GTX275 OC 896MB. While the GTX 275 is faster in most games/resolutions, above 1920x1200 it will be memory starved, and the 1700MB GTX260 will offer smoother gameplay for a cheaper price.

they are great hardrives... but if youre going gigabyte motherboard read this thread first:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=93194

I got one for a build i did on a P53/G31 motherboard gigabyte and went through 3 brand new Samsung F1's breaking them becuase of some bios recovery data that they write to the drive when you put it in that de-initialises the drive making it read on 32mb out of the 1terrabyte

If you're looking for an OS drive, I recommend the Western Digital 640GB Caviar Black WD6401AALS.

If you must get a 1TB, then go with the WD 1TB Black WD1001FALS.

i say ASUS 4890 look great as single card and you have cool options in crossfire in the future , as like you can add an 4850 1G and you pass GTX 285 performance
