So my comp is making a weird noise when gaming. I noticed it just now and didn't know what it was, it's sort of like a clicky/rattly kind of noise. I noticed that when I alt tab out of the game, the computer quiets down a lot and is almost inaudible, when I alt tab back in I hear something powering up and then the noise begins. I have the side panel off on my generic Gateway case, as I'm pending an Antec 300 off Craigslist. I think it might be the 4830 cooler, what do you guys think?

Well, what you could do is take a paper towel roll or something to funnel the noise, and put it near your pc and see if you can find out where it is loudest.
Should solve the problem, but it does seem that it could be your cooler.

I'm not sure what you mean by funneling the noise, it's not the case rattling though. It's something small, like the noise you get when you put a rock into a glass jar and shake it excessively.

I did think it was the hard disk but I don't think a hard disk would be under stress when I'm gaming. I could be wrong though.

It's probably the fan on your videocard spinning up and probably rattling it's housing while under load when gaming.

The easiest way to verify this is to open Catalyst control center, go into advanced options, Enable ATI Overdrive, Check the "Enable Manual Fan Control" box, and slide the slider all the way to 100%, then click apply.

If it starts rattling again, it's the videocard fan and it's housing.

I can't seem to enable manual fan control, everything is grayed out. Could it be because I have a locked BIOS?

Fan speed shows running at 51%, 0% activity, and 42C idle.

Everything is greyed out because you have to enable Overdrive. There is an icon on the overdrive page of Catalyst that looks like a locked Lock, click it and agree with the terms of the popup. After that everything will be ungreyed. That should allow manual fan setting.
