Thinking about a socket 939 rig and would like some help witht the motherboard.

I'm thinking about selling my skt 478 processor and motherboard and getting a skt 939 based rig since it's all so cheap right now and it would be nice to move on to some slightly newer technology.

I'm thinking about one of these two motherboard with an AMD 3800+ or something close to it. Call me crazy all you want but I don't want SLI or crossfire because I have no intention of ever buying a second video card and I don't want to spend an extra $20-$30 for a second PCI-E slot I won't use.

asus definatly. other then a weird overclocking issue (well the lack of) its a solid board. i would however reccomend paying another $15 for the dfi ut ultra-d

Exactly why I asked about them before buying one. Thanks. Since I want a solid product that will last me a few years I should just suck it up and shell out the extra money for the DFI.

I would go for the DFI LanParty UT nF4 Ultra-D. Then later on, if you want to go the SLI route (the way I'm going when DX10 comes out), you can call up DFI, tell them you lost your SLI Bridge, pay $8, and they'll send you one.

How much do you guys think I should open up bids for on my p4, motherboard, and X800 on fleabay? Should I sell them seperate or all together. Maybe bundle the processor with the motherboard? As always your feedback is appreciated.

Socket 939 is pretty much done with the release of AM2/DDR2 and the Xpress3200 is the last chipset for it. Even if you dont go with Crossfire and only run 1 card, the xpress3200 chipset is superior to the NF4.

It has a max HT of 1600, vs 1000 on the Ultra-d. That means a lot of headroom for OC'ing.
Oh yeah it also has a max FSB of 322, vs 316 on the DFI. So even more room for OC'ing.

I would suggest the ASUS, or the DFI boards.

Why have a questionable $80 board when you can have a foolproof $65 board, or a solid SLI $80 board?

My budget is basically what I can sell my current parts for plus a little more. I have a PCI-E X800 I can borrow for the time being but I need to keep my RAM to keep costs down so AM2 and conroe are out of the question. My memory is DDR500 so I can probably overclock it to the same speed as DDR2 basically equaling AM2. 95% (not an exaggeration) of my money needs to go to pay for college so upgrading to the "latest and greatest" really is beyond my reach. I've been using Skt 478 and AGP for almost five years now, I got it just whe LGA 775 and PCI-E came out. I think (I hope) I can keep myself afloat with Skt 939 for a while too. I pretty much buy up whatever is out of style when they're letting it go for cheap because the company wants to get rid of it.

Besides I'm sure there will be a new chipset for whatever new, high end processor AMD is cooking up. Whatever AM2 motherboard I buy will be just about as useless as 939 in few months, and in my opinion there isn't a vast difference between DDR and DDR2 anyway. For example, my brothers computer which uses a prescott CPU and DDR2 only scores about 40 more points in sciencemark than my computer.
