Can only keep E8400 above 4ghz if I go past 1.4v

Hey people,

Just like the title says, I have my E8400 @ 4ghz right now (FSB 445x9) @ 1.36v (1.344v @ full load CPU-Z).

However, to go anywhere past 4ghz, the CPU requires a significant bump in voltage... for example, I have it now @ 4.1 ghz @ 1.4v (1.384v in CPU-Z)...

My question is... how suicidal is this? Am I risking the life of my CPU? Would you guys accept 1.4v as a 24/7 voltage?

Temps are nice, i guess. On a Zalman CNPS7500, idle temps are around 38ºC and load temps are around 58-60ºC.

What do you guys think? Am I risking too much? Is 100 extra mhz worth this increase in Vcore?

I know most people will probably say no... but it's kind of a psychological mark you know, to actually have it above 4ghz... :ohwell:

I believe 1.5v is the limit for safe voltages.

Depends on the stepping. C0 requires insane volts to be stable above 4GHz. E0 takes a little less, but above 1.4 is necessary. And I wouldn't keep it at around 60c all the time.

personally wouldnt go above 1.35-1.38v on that chip 24/7. You may find after a month or 2 it wont hold 4.1GHz at 1.4v and then u need 1.4v to hold 3.8GHz, etc

1.4 is the maximum for 45nm chips, so I would try and keep it somewhere below that

I had my C0 at 1.45 and beyond 24/7 no problems tho.
I was gentler with the E0 however, didn't go above 1.4, but also 24/7 with crunching and all.

try tweak other setting's.

edit: after set vcore on 1.45 for a week, my q9450 refused to boot @3.5ghz, which was stable on 1.37 before i try 1.45 for 3.6

I think that since temps and volt. limits are kept within reasonably safe limits, you have nothing to fear. However, I also think that your gain in games is not really worth reducing your chips' life span.... I know that 3.6 to 4.0 is the best for using an e8400 24/7, but most importantly for games....I know this from experience....

I recommend a 24/7 set at 3.6Ghz during summer time.

Here's what I got right now in the BIOS options:

CPU Voltage - 1.4v

CPU PLL Voltage - 1.60v (Not sure about this one)

FSB Termination Voltage - 1.30v (I read this was the safe max)

DRAM Voltage - 2.06v

NB Voltage - 1.36v (I tried to go 1.4v but didn't seem to make a difference)

SB Voltage - 1.40v


Load Line Calibration - Enabled


CPU \ PCI-E Spread Spectrum - Both disabled

CPU \ NB Clock Skew - I have this on Auto. however, I read these settings can make the difference between a stable OC and an unstable one. I have no idea what to set these to, though.

CPU Margin Enhancement - Optimized


Any recommended tweaks?

Don't you have the option to set CPU Termination (also known as VTT)? Raising that helps for really high OCs.

Also, I think you may have some things set too high. I dunno if that voltage is required for the NB. A P45 NB should run 400 with 1.2 volts, and 450 with 1.3.

Also I recommend checking the Asus P45 owners club thread, I believe there is a plethora of information there about those guy's OCing settings.

SB Voltage - 1.40v

try to reduce SB till is stable....

then increase fsb in 5khz increments till is stable again....(you could try this, while mem timings are loosened a notch and after getting the cpu stable tighten them again and increase mem fsb)...

In any case, you have to experiment and hope someone with knowledge of your mobo will give you some specific info...

That should help you stablize and its completly safe!!

I think you're right about that. Might need to take it to 1.4.

And DO take a look at lowering your NB and SB voltages. If your voltages on those areas (or any areas for that matter) are unnecessarily too high they can create instability rather than keep it from happening.

The few things that don't really require much bumping are NB and SB and PLLs don't really require much of a boost for stability either.

I've done some reading about this mobo... And you're are probably right: CPU and FSB termination volts are probably different (I'm no expert :p) but I recall seeing somewhere that in the P5Q Pro, the FSB termination volt was = VTT.

Dunno :(

And thanx for the advice, I lowered my NB and SB volts... they are now @ 1.3v NB and AUTO for SB.

Yes, I have one stuck sensor that never goes below 39ºc. But they both work fine when temps rise.

I had a E8400 a while back and 3.8Ghz was the sweet spot on it for 24/7
Only time i went above that was for bench runs!!
Remember..Higher clock speeds doesnt always make it faster or better due to instability!!

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
I had a E8400 a while back and 3.8Ghz was the sweet spot on it for 24/7
Only time i went above that was for bench runs!!
Remember..Higher clock speeds doesnt always make it faster or better due to instability!!

thats so true... there are also 'sweet spots' for these chips, where one sometimes a lower FSB/Frequency will actually be faster than the setting above it, depending on the motherboard.

Your nb voltage should be ok at 1.2-1.3,mines fine above 450fsb at 1.21v.
