dvd/cd reader or burner

long story short, building a comp, need to choose a cd thing.
do burners also read data on discs? also need to know if a burner can would be able to play games.
ps. dont call me stupid for asking this question i always wondered what a burner does. :eek:

Nowerdays DVD drives usually can read and write (burn) many differnt types of CDs and DVDs..

Writing a DVD meens putting data on it..

All DVD-ROMS play games, but DVD-ReWriters allow you to burn CDs/DVDs (ie make a copy) and allow you to play games.

Basically, DVDRW's are just as cheap as DVDROMs (reads & plays data) so just grab a DVD-RW

the only point of a burner is to burn your own disks.

To your last question: Many use two drives to make disc-to-disc copies. You put the source disc into the reader, and the empty disc in the writer. THis way you can copy the data from one disc to the otehr without first moving all the data to your Harddisk and then to the empty disc.

oh his note said "and"... shit, i missed that.

An example of why people used to do it, is easy. look how much a blu-ray ROM costs vs a burner. a few hundred $$.

people buy a ROM now and a burner in a year or two when disks are cheaper, and just leave both in their PC cause no one wants to buy a second hand ROM drive when burners are all the rage.

The other example is the weird people that MRCL mentioned... its almost always faster, and definately more reliable to rip to your HDD before reburning, but some people just want to be different.
