Which specific drives are you looking at? I assume a 7200RPM drive with 16MB cache, and a WD Greenpower drive?

I would go with the 32MB cache, but i believe 7200RPM is the lowest they go HDD wise.(i think)

Just realized some go as low as 5400RPM.lol

Depends on the drive. Platter density is more important. Depending on the size 32mb won't give you much advantage. Variable is usually a bit slower but not enough to tell much usually and it uses less power.

what about say 5400rpm/16mb cache vs variedRPM/32mb cache? will the varied rpm be better than 5400?

and yeah was talking about the green power caviar varied rpm.

varied rpm..... whats the lowest/minimum of rpm it goes down to?

Varied will go between 5400 and 7200 rpm depending on use. As for the first comparison the second would hypothetically be faster all other things being equal, but as I said there are more factors that make a good drive such as platter density and design.

AFAIK, no drive varies its rotation speed. WD Green drives spin at 5400rpm constant.

Yea, there are no varied speed drives.

It is marketing hype.

IE, the WD Green drives do not hit 7200 ever, and never will.

Varied RPM is a lie.

If you're looking for a good drive, get a WDxx00AAKS. They are incredible drives. 7200RPM, 16MB cache, and very quiet for their performance.
