Need a wireless router

Hi,

I want to get this gadget but i know nothing about it. What should I take into account when buying wireless router? I am using both desktop PC and notebook. I want my PC to be connected via standard cable (because I have a good speed) and have a wireless connection for the notebook. Thanks for any information given.

It depends. You definitely want one that supports Gigabyte ethernet for your wired connection to your PC. If you're using the built in wireless in your laptop, then a model that supports wireless b/g will suffice. If you want highspeed wireless (N), then the price goes up and you have to purchase a wireless N card in addition.

For brands, I'd recommend Linksys. They have excellent support and are owned by Cisco.

Honestly there isn't a need for gigabit lan unless you're really going to be transferring over the network. Cheaper and basic.

I had a Linksys WRT54GS... it was nice while it lasted, although I never actually used the wireless...

I used mine with the lite version of dd-wrt it worked great up until about a week ago.

if you don't need a lot of features i would STRONGLY suggest getting the WRT54GL and running tomato on it, tomato has some EXTREMELY good reviews and it should be the most newbie friendly of anything.

i don't run it myself, i run openWRT whiterussian + X-Wrt but i need lots of features

True, unless you have a good fast provider. I'm fortunate in that respect. I can see a profound difference when downloading large files between my PC with a gigabit nic and those without. Also, cable companies are upgrading their speed in order to compete with satellite. They also want to compete with people like Netflix. Many will be offering similar movie download services. So getting a gigabit router could future-proof your setup.

I love Tomato, and the WRT54GL is rock solid!

And don't get a Gigabit router, you will be lucky to get double 100Mbit speeds, they just aren't great. Get a true Gigabit switch, they are so much better than a gigabit router.

My DIR-655 has just as much throughput as my D-link Gb switch. I pull a pretty steady 90-100MB/S on either of them when I'm transferring between my fast drives.

Get a gigabit switch that truly supports jumbo frames, and you will see a difference. But I'll agree that even a gigabit router would be a nice upgrade from 100Mb.

Though I still prefer the WRT54GL and a Gigabit Switch.

My stuff does support jumbo frames. I'm limited by drive speed more than anything.

Thats probably true, and probably true with 99% of home uses. :laugh:

So I guess a Gigabit router wouldn't be too bad, but I still prefer the WRT54GL+Gigabit Switch.
