Need suggestions for a new CPU cooler

I am currently using ZALMAN CNPS 9700 to cool down my 3.6G Q6600. However, the core temp easily gets close to 80C.

Are there any efficent coolers that you guys can suggest, I mean they should handle 3.6G Q6600 easily.

80C ?

Do you mean 80F? If not I would check out your cooler and make sure that it's fully clamped/screwed down. When was the last time you changed your thermal paste?

That was really faaaar away. About 2 years ago when I first installed my computer

ASUS PC Probe shows 55 idle and around 69~71 fully loaded.

Everest Ulitmate shows that core1 and core2 exceeds 80C when running occt

The only temp program I trust is real temp. 80C isn't that off the wall though, I've heard of it. What's your ambient temperature? The CNPS9990 is good. I use the Xigmatek Dark Knight, its pretty solid too. You might want to look into ICD7 thermal paste. Its good stuff!

you have to change your thermalpaste now !!

I have the CNPS 9700 NT too and i never get temps like yours even my Q9650 clocked to 3.8ghz in these hot summer days !!

If that doesn't work you could always get the Thermalright Ultra Xtreme 120 or the Black version since these are 2 of the best ones around.
Other than that great coolers are also the Scythe Mugen 2, CoolerMaster V8, Prolimatech Megahalems and of course the Noctua NH-U12P.

Xig S1283 too, especially if you can find one around $30 shipped...keeps my q6600 @ 3.6/1.4v @ 55C or less on load, lately w/cooler temps I've been below 50C.

Now it is IMPRESSIVE!

I removed my 9700, cleaned it and get some thermal grease on it. Guess what? Now it is 35 idle and 46 on load.

Man, I never realize that thermal compond could make such hugh difference!

I agree. I think you must have had WAY to much thermal compound on the first time, so you weren't getting good contact.

yeah, they were.

Once I played L4D for 2 hrs, upon exiting the game, the temp reading was 81C on core1 and 2

+1 on the xiggy or you can get the OCZ Vendetta 2 and change the weak fan to a better flow fan and get same results as xiggy.

Actually the Vendetta 2 outperforms the Xigmatek solution even with the stock fan.
However everything we say is irrelevant since the problem got fixed with the same cooler.
