Champions online: Thoughts, tips, tactics.

Bought this game last night and I'm unsure if I like it yet as I've only had for less than a day.

This is the first MMO Ive ever played. What the hell are you supposed to do in this game?

If there is anyone playing this now please share your thoughts of the game, any tips you might have to get started and other useful tactics.

Theres been a few threads on this game already I'm not sure all who play here, I know some played in the beta, and me and Marineborn are playing the game right now. Not sure what to say on tactics, it all really comes down to the setup you are building with your character and what your end goal is.

As far as what your suppose to do, keep questing and moving to the new areas, and leveling up. Can also hit up some PvP, certain setups are better at it than others and if this is your first MMO you might want to learn the ropes before trying that out.

basically Ive just been lagging around killing these drones... very boring.

I don't know what the point of the game is right now, I know I'm supposed to gain XP but as far as goals for my end character I have no idea. I'm going to start doing some searching around and try to get info on what exactly it is I'm supposed to be doing.

I chose the gadgeteer class btw

i find it very enjoyable first of just taking enjoyment in the character classes, and the very start of the game tutorial is just boring...Ugh but once you get past that you start having fun when you get your super powers and can starts flying or running super fast and start gaining new abilities im lvl 18 right now and i love paying it

Played it from the recent beta launch, 3 days later I cancelled my pre order. Lacks follow through, and is very much a point A to B game - get assignment from NPC A, got to point B and kill 'x' NPC's / gather 'x' ammount of 'x' item, rinse and repeat.

Dont get me wrong, the game itself is excellent, it just needs more . . . oomph.

They have been down for maintenance since early this morning. They were suppose to be back up at noon pst, but they haven't shown up yet and no new announcement has been made, so sit and wait I guess.

Thats the nature of MMO's, some like it some don't just how it is, gotta progress your character and watch them grow till level cap. You gonna play another MMO or no?

ahh ok. I connected about an hour ago and it started downloading a second 620mb patch (another last night when i first installed of course) but it hung at 0.04% then timed out

I always been tempted to try that, with the new options it has to go fullscreen and such it doesn't look too bad, but I don't think I will ever find the time to.

Yeah the patch will be like 624mb, mine hung too, waiting for it to allow us to patch again. I think I'm gonna go start up a club for this as the character creation in this game is beyond unique, I'm not sure who else plays, but I would like to see everyones creations.

I don't understand what you mean by limited. I spent like 3 hrs making my main character You can't add new models in the game, but there is probably over 200 options for just head things alone and same goes for chest, legs and hands have quiet a bit less though. Then you have like 20 options for head and character build that are sliders.

Hopefully you didn't miss all those options, there really is a ton of things you can do.

I'm going to wait this one out until it is cheaper. If it never gets any cheaper I guess I'm not playing. If I'm gong to pay fifty bucks plus a monthly fee, the game needs to look better graphically than this.

erocker I agree... I wish I didn't buy this last night. It looked cool but meh, i barely even get 23 fps anyway on this and it looks like sh!!

I'm sure it will improve throughout updates, but my first impression is like that of a crackhead asking me out to dinner to a place all my friends regularly dine at.

This game looks really good, you need to play it too see, screenshots seem cartoony, but things have a good amount of detail, not like AoC, but better than games like EQ2. Remember you also get a free month of play with the game. Marine will vouch that it looks really good in game.

In the end though, MMO's are not a graphical market, as there as so many things happening on screen at once they just don't crank it up or they loose a lot of customers. But this game does have a good amount like I said, if you don't think so, I'll have to TPUcapture my game crashes from running out of video memory running 1920x1200 Here's a few killer examples of spell effects and very good graphics.

Look at those ice effects, you will see those ice effects coating my skin and the enemys skin isn't normally there, I'll post a pic of my character to show you. But I pretty much froste bite everything. And the ice walls I make look amazing.

Theres fire flight, I changed the flames to blue to match my ice character.

Here's one from their site. I think it's a nice balance, it just wouldn't feel right playing a superhero in a world that didn't look like it was drawn for comic books. But this has a nice balance, I really think it fits a lot, I feel like a super hero.

I seen all the preset options for characters, but quite frankly I wasn't impressed.. I mean deer antlers? Bunny ears? ..

I'm not trying to sound like a cynical dick (I am sounding like a cynical dick sorry) and I never usually talk this bad about anything, I guess my expectations were too high.

The graphics do give the feel of a "live digital comic book" but the areas are way too simple looking and alot of waste on things that shouldnt be there, like all that blue plasma lookng stuff everywhere.

There are beast heads that those things are meant for. You really need to pick a theme when making a character, you have options for the top of the head, eyes, side of the head, mouth. You theme these together to come up with a good end result. There are a ton of cool looking characters around, if you spend the time you can make almost anything.

I have seen Batman, Hulk, Captain America, Superman, Ironman, The cop for YMCA band (lol), I had made Bob Dole. But if you try and toss together a character without really checking out what works together then your going to end up with something that looks like it was thrown together with no theme. Take a look at my ice character, I spent a lot of time on perfecting him, I wish servers were up now I changed a few more things to pull his theme together a bit more. If you need help making a character and you know a basic theme that your looking for post it up, I'll make it, save the profile and toss it over to you. Then you can put it in your game files and load the profile and tweak it to your liking.

Nope, I'm always flying while casting, I don't think the vertical and horizontal movement would work to well for how I play. If I remained on the ground I would think about it for PvE purposes to be a bit more relaxing. But def not for PvP. A friend at work is playing with a 360 controller, he said it's working pretty well, but as with most PC games and a console controller, there are a few things that annoy him.

I didn't see your post about bad FPS till now, with a 275 that makes no sense. It might have to do with your proc though, maybe try clocking that up a bit. What res are you trying to run it at? I will be completely honest though, the view distance in this game is flat out massive, you can see across any full zone as far as I can tell. When I am in Millennium City and I fly over buildings, there will be times I drop to like 5 fps. But most of the time it runs smooth while above buildings, and while on the ground it runs like butter pushing 50 - 60fps pretty consistently even at 1920x1200 with every single setting maxed out.

yeah i was using the controller on the 20 minutes i was able to play after buying it and the server going offline. you still have to use the kb though because there isnt a main menu navigation for the other commands

this e6600 is clocked ot 3000.. i'll have a q9550 tomomorrow from newegg if it comes on time... usually does with them.

Hopefully that will help you out, the 275 you got should be able to run it pretty darn smooth, I think it won't matter what hardware anyone is running in Millennium City, if you want to fly over the city and have max view distance, it will drop anything to it's knees being able to effectively see the whole city at once.

Like I said about char creation though, if you need some help let me know, will be glad to put something together. There are really a lot of options and one thing it took me a while to figure out is, say your on head design, look up top, you should see like "Head and Hair" or something, click it and a drop down menu will come up that allows you to look at: Full Masks, Half Helmets, Full Helmets, Beast Heads, Demonic Heads, and Insect Heads. Those sub things really add a lot more to it.

Like I said though, pick a theme and go off that. Or if you find something that looks great, try and build around it. When I made Absolute Zero I wanted something that fit Ice. I didn't know where to start though, be a robot, human, demon, or beast. I was switching through options and found a face mask that I could texture kind of like ice so I went with that. I couldn't find much to fit together though, then I accidentally hit rock skin and changed the colors and I was very happy with that. Then I used bone (what you see sticking out of his shoulders and head) and changed those to a light blue so it looks like broken ice sticking out of his skin. Added in a thing to cover his jaw and the leg braces and gave him the back story of a science experiment gone wrong, and the metal parts are just coverings that could be reasoned for deformations or whatever else your mind can run with.

So when your making your character, even if you see a name of something and you don't think it will fit, take a look, it might look awesome. Also when you look at things, and you get the option like "cloth, leather, metal". Switch through those, some of them get different options or will have all together different costume pieces for each.

ill vouch the game is gourgous, i play aoc on dx10 with everything maxed at about 50-109fps and..honeslty i dont know why but i just like the champions graphics better. maybe its cause im a fan of superheroes and comic books. but with everything maxed i play on a 32 inch monitor at 1378x768 widescreen it looks awesome i get a average of 50-60fps with my current setup. 4870x2 FTW just btw...lol but i mean the game just realeased there gonna keep adding more and more stuff for costumes as time goes on, and if you just throw together a chracter its gonna look all stupid. take your time and itll look kickass. all the powers look awesome when used. and this is pretty much one of the smoothest launches ive seen for mmo except for the patches...where theve tried to iron everything out.

yall can still play your n64 looking wow if you want, but imo champions is the way to go if you want to have some good ol fun

my favorite saying in the game is where grond comes down this huge enemy boss...and yellz YOu are about as exciting as rival MMo grond leave now! HAHAHAHAH pwned
