Honestly, I think unless you're running something the level of Zone Alarm, or completely disconnected from the Web, or maybe running a mac or linux base home pc, you really can't be sure of that anyway.

Possibly, but I believe there should be an 'opt-out' option, especially when the application automatically makes you 'opt-in'.

And I use KIS, which does alert me about applications wanting internet access.

Just installed it and have run a quick scan - really tiny footprint for an AV plus it is free, thanks Microsoft

Running it on my Win7 Ult right now, and it's definitely a smaller footprint than some of the elephants I've used (and deleted). Actively scanning, it's less than 50mb, seems to run pretty smooth. We'll see how it goes Enjoy, everyone

oddly enough it is reporting suspicious activity regarding some kind of temp files it finds in documents/appdata/local when i use the zune software. Hopefully they'll get rid of that annoyance soon.

Most of the software worth the trouble I know of, kicks some type of alert, whether mild and behind the scenes, or moderate and in front of your face, when something tries to run from a temp directory on your computer. I wouldn't expect much of a change on that one, but they might

MSE doesn't call home any mor ethan any other program of this kind. Their SpyNet backend keeps statistic track of detected malware and suspicious activity detection. The "possible identifyable information" falls under file paths. If something under your account gets detected, Microsoft might get your name through the profile folder name like:
C:\Documents and settings\YOURNAME\Desktop

This is the only thing that might "leak" out. But really, i wouldnt bother worrying about that.
They'll get milions of names to their statistics engine. Do you think they'll care about your very name between milions of them? I doubt it.
If you set SpyNet to Advanced, you allow more info regarding threat detection, but that you have to enable by yourself.
