Mac dead? NEED HELP!

Ok I got someone here that has a dead Mac I think. She wont boot. It just stays with the Apple logo and the wheel spinning. I started it in root mode and ran "sbin/fsck -y" and got back the following error upon drive check....

I/O Error.
Dev/rdisk 052
HFS: Exited
Signal 8.

Is it safe to assume the hard drive is DOA or am I missing something?

No it finds it but nails the error half way through. Do you think there is anyway to recover the data "in house"?

not a clue. macs arent exactly made for user repair.

Well an HD is just a HD. Its just formatted for "Mac Journal". Or Unix I should say.

i have no idea on that side of things - i have a chance with intel based macs, but my unix/old mac knowledge is lacking.

Dude, the Mac OS X and its varients are all based on the BSD branch of Unix.

There was an issue with the new OS X, I believe leopard.

That should give you a place to start, not sure if thats what your issue is, but doesn't hurt to check.

That generally means bad HDD. Just to be safe, run a "/sbin/fsck -fy". It's generally a lot easier to boot from an install disc, and run a Repair Disc in Disc Utility tho.

As for file recovery, if it comes to that, I have the best success with ProSoft's Data Rescue. It's been quite a while since I've had to do anything of the sort tho, so I'm not really up to date on the best recovery software.
