Would DDR2 be a bottleneck on GeForce GT220?

Hey guys,

Your opinion on the question in the thread title. Best Buy currently has the GALAXY GeForce 210 and GT220, but their GT220 board has DDR2 (NV reference board had DDR3). The GT220 has 48 stream processors. The G210 that I have has 16sp and 64bit DDR2 that OCs to 575MHz (from 400). Should I wait for a DDR3 version? TIA.

Obviously there will be some performance loss over GDDR3. But on that low end of a card, I don't think it will matter anyway.

Wait for the DDR3 version, GDDR2 is definitely a hinderance. I wouldn't buy any card, even low end, with GDDR2.

I just performed an experiment with my GeForce 210 with OCCT GPU. I left the core and shader at stock. With the memory at 400MHz, the card got 8FPS. When I overclocked the RAM to 575MHz, the framerate jumped up to 11. So, I guess the RAM is a bottleneck on my G210. :banghead:

I will definitely wait for a DDR3 version then. I hope BB gets some better ones next week with the real launch of the GPUs. It's going to suck if they only have the single Galaxy GT220 with the DDR2 RAM. I know that the cards are probably going to be much cheaper online, but I don't have a credit card, and i'm not worried about the markup as I don't buy anything else anyway. These are just fun cards for me. I have an 8 month old PNY 9800GT, but it's loud, hot, and just overkill for the games that I normally play (just Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead, both of which I have the CPU performance to run a buttery smooth 60FPS with).

If it looks like the GeForce4 MX420 SDR vs. the ASUS version with the crazy overclockable DDR, what a big difference.

@a111087: I was first with the G210.

I'm not worried about being first with the GT220, as I made my sig before going back to to the TPU homepage and seeing a GT220 on there. :roll:

get the DDR3 version.

I'm using the GT220 1GB DDR3 version now and I'm surprised that it could actually handle games quite well, usually with 0xAA of course.

Oh, good. Thanks for your valued input. My G210 is about half the performance that I need/want for Valve games like TF2 and Left 4 Dead, so I figure a GT220 DDR3 would suit me.

Why don't you this 9600GSO from Newegg? It's way faster than any DDR2 GT220, and probably faster than any DDR3 model because of it's 96shaders. And for $40 after rebate, the price is right too

why not buy a 9800GT or 9800GTX+? they can be had for fairly cheap now days and if you think a GT220 will suit you then im 100% sure that the 9800GT/GTX+ would be more then you would ever ask for

If he needs a card that runs on only pci-e power I would say just buy a HD4670 or a 9800GT Green

+1 but just to throw it out there... Most 9800GTs run without pci-e power now but still have to watch out because some of them still do (the older ones)
