Is this a wise upgrade choice (Graphics & PSU)? Suggestions?

Antec TruePower New Blue Modular 750W Power Supply

and...

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5870 "Dirt 2 Edition" 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Total cost would be €476.

They'd be for my desktop rig (see system specs), with the E8400 @ 4Ghz and 6GB RAM.

I plan to buy them around mid-November since for now I'm only using the laptop.

I have 4 questions...

1) Should I wait more (perhaps for GTX300?)

2) Is the PSU an adequate one or perhaps you suggest something else?

3) Is this upgrade worth or would my processor aor pci-e x16 1.0 slot be bottlenecking?

4) Would I see a significant improvement in image quality & performance in games compared to my 8800GT?

Thanks! :toast:

I call CPU bottleneck. You won't be able to feed that 5k with an 8400 but the o/c will definitly help you out.

ofc she'll have a bottleneck. anything not a 4Ghz i7 will bottlneck these things - but that doesnt mean it wont be craploads faster than what she has already (and what i have, and what you have, lazzer)

PCI-E 8x hardly affects it, check recent articles here on TPU - w1zz did a good one on 5k cards.

i'd suggest a corsair TX750 tbh, its certified for 5870 crossfire ;)

You're serious about this?
Do you think I'd get the same performance whether I stick a 5850 or a 5870?
If yes, I'd choose the cheaper option.

By the way, my pci-e isn't x8 but x16 --- though it's the old version 1.0 not 2.0...

well, i know i'm CPU bottlenecked until i hit about 4.2GHz.

that said, its only my max FPS thats limited - my minimum sure goes up when i add my second card in crossfire ;)

Well... my rig does run stable at 4.2Ghz... but I keep it at 4Ghz.

Basically what I'm looking for is to squeeze the maximum graphics power out of it-

If I can stick a weaker GPU (5850 or 280 or 260?) and still get the same performance as I would get with a 5870... I'd surely go for the cheaper option!
Especially if a weaker graphics card won't necessitate that I also upgrade my PSU...

your current PSU would be too little for even a single 260 or 4870, let alone higher.

I'd say a 5850 would do you nicely, paired with a corsair PSU

http://ati.amd.com/products/certified/powersupplies.html

in my opinion, everything on this below list should do a single 5850

the older models merely wouldnt be updated for 5 series cards, since ATI wouldnt have any on hand to test with

ooo I should update my sys specs. A few things have changed.

imo I'd get the 5850 and save a few bucks. When you get the cash, grab another 5850 for xfire and you'll be gtg for awhile.

He has a 750. Thats plenty. I ran 6 hdds, a 3870x2 and 2 3870s plus a Q6600@3.4 for awhile.

black panther (a she) has "550W LC something forgot the name 12V rail 16A & 18A"

also, while her motherboard is a P965 chipset (crossfire supported) her board only has one slot, so no crossfire for her :(

Oh sorry. :D

5850 is fast and would work well with the rest of the system. I read a review somewhere they have those 5850 o/c'ing and benching as fast as a stock 5870s anyways. Can't be that much slower that a simple o/c would bring it up to the next models performance unless the test system couldn't feed the 5870.

Oh btw. That Hyper-x she's running, it performs better at 1066 5-5-5-15 then it did at 800 4-4-4-12 in my box.

Antec Truepower would be more than adequate. Don't worry about cpu bottleneck, just raise the resolution you game at.

Can't raise it more than 1680x1050 for now... but guess I can also raise the antialiasing for a good picture and have still smooth gameplay.
My 8800GT gets killed if I use more than 2xAA in Fallout3... I also can't use high-resolution texture mods..

Hopefully a 5870 will solve that...

(Oh and I like the antec psu because of the blue led )

Is it safe to assume that my 8800GT 512MB is the same as a 9600GT 512MB?

That way I can compare the benchmarks....

the 9600GT is inferior to an 8800GT.

8800GT and 9800GT are the same, so look for comparisons there.

9800GT has higher clocks and 55nm gpu compared to 65nm 8800GT. Same clocks with them = same performance.

9600GT is a bit better than HD3870 so the difference between 8800GT and 9600GT is about 10-15%.

Close enough to compair. The difference between the 8800gt and 9600gt isn't half a chart apart. I think she's just looking for her baseline on those charts to compair the 58xx performance against. The 9600 is closest to her's in performance to see -about- where she stands.

Benchmark Scores Nyooom.
9800GT has higher clocks and 55nm gpu compared to 65nm 8800GT. Same clocks with them = same performance.

9600GT is a bit better than HD3870 so the difference between 8800GT and 9600GT is about 10-15%.

no, they dont.

8800GT and 9800GT are identical - only SOME 9800GT's have the 55nm GPU, most of the cards are 100% identical (reference clocks dont mean much with these, you could buy 8800GT's with higher clocks than the 9808GT's came with stock) - and i mean 100%. i've swapped BIOS'es between enough to know.

I say get the Antec TruePower or a Corsair TX750W along with a 5850. Then in a few years or so when the bottleneck starts to get annoying or you want crossfire, upgrade the CPU and mobo. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Soylent Joe, go with a Corsair Tx750 and a 5850 and save some cash for a processor and motherboard upgrade later on. Or if you have the cash go for a Corsair HX850, with that you can power two 5870 and a Quadcore later on.

With that in mind I guess it'd be better to go for the 5870. I'm pretty sure I'll last at least a year on it... considering I've had the 8800GT since... November 2007!

Then in 2010 or 2011 I'll buy a CF mobo for sure... with some core i9... ddr5 ram.... lol or whatever'd be available... :D

I'm pretty excited to get a 58xx card because it'd be my first ATI card ever... :) And unless I'm mistaken it gives like twice the performance of my current 8800GT.

Oh also you were asking what a good comparison to the GT would be? Think about 10% lower than a 9800GTX.
