Never, never, never use the same password for bank accounts as you do for other online stuff :slap:

Hasn't effected me so far. I think what Mussels says is likely what has happened.

Here is some of the methods I use for creating, remembering and managing complex passwords:

If you can, get a copy of portable KeePass and use that to securely store all your passwords info.

To create a "strong" password, think of a common 4 letter word...for example

"door"

then double and you get

"doordoor"

then using a phone keepad find the numbers that spell door

"3667"

add that to previous

"doordoor3667"

now apply initial caps and replace vowels wil numbers

"D00rd00r3667"

You have a strong password and you only have to remember the rules not the word itself

Rules (make your own variations):

4 letter word
double it
find numeric value and add to end
Initial caps
replace vowels with numbers

Using this method it is relatively easy to have very complex unique passwords for each site that you need...example:

For steam: key word = stea, final password = St34st347832
For bank : key word = cash, final password = C4shc4sh2274

I have the memory of a goldfish and this works incredibly well for me (I have around 30 frequently used password...all unique) ;)

That's not really a strong password. It's a very good example of how to create a password approaching a strong password that you can easily remember, but any kind of algorithmic password heuristics could pick up the patterns you've chosen. The only true strong passwords are random passwords, which we can only memorize or write down somewhere and sticky note to a monitor.

ah but unless the heuristics new the pattern, they would have to resort to brute force algorithms with dictionary attacks to get the password - and that would not be fast.

try to make rediculous passwords, random words letters symbolds numbers up and lowercase and a good idea is to keep a peice of paper somewhere safe that has your passwords on it, But not your computer in case your forget, i have a diffrent password for every website im subcribed too, and i forget them sometimes thats why i have that paper, my paswords are no less then 19 Characters a peice

OR you could just slap things on your keyboard and remember what comes out.

I was just about to suggest 'Button Mash' myself (that term makes me laugh for some reason)

but yeah.... +1 for the slapping keyboard idea,

I can't believe how frequent and common this seems to be (at least for me). I have another steam account thats been hijacked once before and now a totally different one has been hijacked as well. I was able to get it back before and aim to get it again its just frustrating to see the frequency of this, one was one two many to start with.

I mean how is this done? I'm not looking for a tutorial here just an explanation. I never give my account info to anyone, not even friends. So is it Keyloggers, malware, hackers, what?

I'm going to run some scans to see if I have some Trojans or something. :shadedshu

Stop trying to pay hookers with Steam weekend deals and this won't happen.

Oh so you've tried that too huh? You could have at least given a warning out to people about that before hand, then maybe I wouldn't have done it lol.

Good News everyone.

Every time I read that it is in the professor's voice from futurama :D .

Anyway, I'm glad you got your account back, just be more careful on those forums and keep some antivirus running (I use avast, good protection with minimal system resources).

Lol, now thats what I'm going to be thinking.
that is what i was thinking lol....That's funny cause i have given account info to people and have never been hijacked but then again I use a simple Date code to change my passwords like I pick say the 5th of January of '09 to start and the word "Cocacola" the first month it would be "5Cocacola09" the second month it would be "36Cocacola09"
then "64Cocacola09" etc...

I have the memory of a goldfish and this works incredibly well for me (I have around 30 frequently used password...all unique) ;)

thanks for that... i just hacked your steam account... going into your bank now :D
kidding :p

Routers are a hardware firewall, so that helps if you don't have one.

Routers are NAT devices, nothign more or less. Thinking you are secure behind one is silly, they don't do packet inspection, or active state checks. I purposely let the windows firewall down on a new install, it took less than 5 minutes to get infected with a worm, and less than 15 for multiple infections, and overnight I had all sorts of malware installed, and this was a year ago.

Now we have browser redirects, with fake antivirus/spyware eleminators/firewalls.

And you always have the possibility of a rootkit remaining resident even through a format, all it has to do is insert itself in the boot sector and load at boot.
