Hey there all! Just looking for a program to back up my dvds. That and my friends have a habit of keeping some of my movies longer than I would like too. So if anyone can list any free programs I would appreciate it. If you have a program that isn't free, feel free to name it. I just may buy it, if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I've been trying to find a decent program to back them up to AVI this weekend, seems they all suck :)
If you want to back up as DVD DVDdecrypter+DVDshrink should be enough.

Does the DVD43 program have any use with the other ones? Or is it unnecessary?

try dr.divx. it used to work great for me, for some reason i messed its config up a few days ago and now the audio video sync is way out of wack. but it works well other than that.

I tried it, it hangs at about 75% while analyzing. Both 2.0 and 2.something beta do.

hm. i'm running 2.0OSS, works brilliantly. hangs sometimes during analysis when converting weird files like .flv, but for UNencrypted VOB's it works real well. just select all the vobs that make up the movie during the open dialogue, it'll analyze them all and splice them into a single move.

UGH!!!

I tried Divx, dvd shrink, dvd dcrypter, and they're all confusing as hell. I backed up my dvd using dvd dcrypter and it won't let me watch the dvd on the computer, is that normal? I wish these things had tutorials or instructions...

Use DVD fab to rip it, then shrink it with DVD shrink into a ISO then burn them.

DVD fab will even rip Sony DVDs

one popular tool is auto GK

I prefer the fair use wizard

The lite edition is free - limitation is 700MB per rip. I paid for it because it's incredibly easy to use, and I rip at about 1050MB.

Last time I used the Gordian knot it was exactly that, a real Gordian knot. Impossible to undo. Though that's long ago, if you say it works fine it won't hurt to try it again when I get home.

Ok, I used AutoGK yesterday. It gave me a perfect result, got me a 1400MB AVI which has perfect image quality. Didn't have to do anything to get it, just wait. However, it took like 4 hours, it has been encoding several times and eventually I selected "shut down when done" and went to bed.

I'm very happy with my AVI file though, now I can watch my concert anywhere. It was a DVD9 and I don't have dual layer disks, some day I'll buy some and burn it though :D

DvD Fab rips a DVD in 15 mins, then it takes 30 mins to Shrink it to 4.7 gigs with DVD shirnk, than 10 mins to burn.
