pci express 2.0 cards are backwards compatible with 1.0 so they run in each others slots only at whatever speed the slot is capable of tho, so say you buy a new 2.0 card it would run at 1.0 speeds in a 1.0 slot

thermaltake toughpower 750w is more than enough power for a 5870, 750w is enough power and toughpower psu generally have a lot of amperage on the rails

if you dont really know what kinda gains or why you want a 5870 dont bother with it, you would expect a little bit more than the gtx260 for example but tbh the gtx 260 can do everything at the moment

a nice 4gb kit of 1066mhz ram would be tasty, the pc will struggle to run on 2gb of ram if you upgrade the gpu
4gb gives the system more space to run in, for example 1gb for the OS 2gb for the game and 1gb for background tasks, usually you never need more than 4gb and even then sometimes never use the full 4gb but you always use at least 2gb on OS and game alone

i agree with kierand. if u go 5870, upgrade ram is a must. also i see that your board is a combo board so it also takes ddr3 and ddr3 is cheaper than ddr2 right now so u might want to get a 4gb kit of ddr3.

EDIT:
i mean is there any gameplay difference between pci-e 1.0 and 2.0

no, we havent got any videocard yet that is bottlenecked in pcie 1.0 to the level it affect performance noticeable

I wouldnt bother getting a HD5870 man, how about the Ram upgrade first then maybe consider a HD5850!

Well TBH id test this card on TPU in a PCI E 1.0/1.1 Mobo then a 2.0 to see if anything different has occurred.

thats a good idea. 5850 is almost same performance but uses less energy and cost a lot less

Yes there is a bottleneck..i went from a E6600@3.2Ghz on Intel XBX2 PCI-E 1.1 16x with a 5870 to AMD 965BE on MSI GD70 with 5870. In FPS games or any games in general the processor couldnt keep up while moving an example is COD4 multiplayer i have it capped at 250 FPS which i got on my E6600 but running or fast movement it would dip down to about 180FPS, now with my new chip i get 250FPS no matter what.
Overall i would still get the 5870...Overclock more if you can if not move to a quad core chip on the same platform you have if possible if its cheap. You could always go 720BE on a gigabyte board maybe unlock the 4th core and that should be good. You can find those combos for about $200 to $300.

Your motherboard i believe only supports DDR2, I'd say put in the fastest your board supports Stock.

Max out on DDR2 dude, you can get 4x2GB to get 8GB which would be more than enough to run a 64bit OS

going from a 260 to a 5870 on your setup would be like going from a 260 to a 260. I have a friend with a i7 setup that the 5870 does well on but when he puts the 5870 with a ddr2 q9650 combo it does the same as his 260

I wouldnt bother getting a HD5870 man, how about the Ram upgrade first then maybe consider a HD5850!

no way man... on a 1920X1200 monitor? maybe for current games...
the next gen games are only just coming out... if hes looking at the 5870, then he can afford it anjd it will at least last him a bit longer than the 5850...

if he is ok to wait then id wait for a few weeks / months till nvidia put their "cards" on the table... price war begins, get a faster / better deal

u r right, man. but i do need another 2gb of ram. i'm thinking that with a 5870 it's going to be a huge change in games like crysis, crysis warhead, gta iv and ofcourse upcoming titles.

i want to buy a 5870 now coz i can sell off my current gtx 260 at decent price, but after a few weeks the re-sell value of my gtx 260 becomes very low.

i want to buy a 5870 now coz i can sell off my current gtx 260 at decent price, but after a few weeks the re-sell value of my gtx 260 becomes very low.

well if you can afford it now then go for it ;)
if youre looking for a good bargain then wait for the GT300 nvidia beast to come out... at least then prices will drop and youll be able to go red or green and save some cash!
(most likely red as green will be $$$ but faster)
