UDK, Unreal Engine 3 Now Free!

Hello Everyone,
I was just looking around the internet and moddb.com when i came across this.

The Unreal Engine 3 has now been released to the public free of charge for non-commercial and educational projects. Go ahead take a look. I know im going to be starting on this right away.

so i just read the EULA about licensing etc...and it talks about fee distributing ...but i wonder what if you want to make a game? and give it away free? do you have to pay anything at that point?

As long as the game was non-commercial you shouldn't have to pay.

That's a shocker. You'd think they wouldn't do that until Unreal Engine 4 is available. Epic's competitors are going to eat it up.

thats what im saying...and their is no clear answer on the foums....it just boggles my mind that no one seems to be able to answer this simple question.

i have this editor...i want to make a standalone game and distribute it for free. is this legal?

no one seems to be able to answer..and if the answer is no..then i call BS because at that point what are you going to do? make a game for you alone?

I believe if you release a non profit game its totally free for the developer/modder, But then you start earning $5000 or more, you have to pay a fee per unit sold or part of the earnings past that.

Its a good move by Epic, and their probably keeping their eyes out for talent. Specially after the resent $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest.

Sure, some amateur developers might make a game that they think is worthy of being marketed. That amateur developer would open a dialog with Epic about getting it published. To publish it, they would work out an agreement to pay for the Unreal Engine via a % of sales figures. Epic gets their money and the developer get published, everyone is happy.

Licensing options are either $99 royalty bearing or $2500 per seat, so looks quite clear to me.

The button underneath does say "Coming Soon!" so perhaps it wasn't there when you looked?

i got ya but thats not the type of game im talking about...if i just want to make a game a few levels or something and distribute it for free because i am under the impression it would be fun for mroe people than just me. can i do that? the thing is the forums have a mixed answers some people say you can some people say you cant. but none of the admins or mods have commented in these threads so im confused. i cant find an official statement. and the EULA says nothing about free. unless im blinded from seeing it because of the lawyer talk.

Releasing it free like this seems like a great idea for any budding game developer out there that wants to hone their mad game programming skillz. :rockout:

With the licensing options in my previous post, it should make commercial UE3 engined games more prevalent and hence earn them more money. There's lots of different types of software out there that's released in this dual way and seems a good way to do it.

If I had the time to play with it, I would download it, too.

Not quite. If you don't charge for your game, then you don't pay a licence or any royalties.

If you do charge for the game, then you can either pay $99 and give them a tithe (the royalty) for every copy of your game sold. Or, you can pay them $2500 and not pay any royalties at all.

I personally would go for the second option in most instances, because I hate paying people over and over. There's something about a royalty system that just rubs me up the wrong way.

Get developers hooked on your engine, and they are gonna use it forever

Same reason why lots of big companies like Adobe, Maxon, Autodesk and those, dosnt go that hard after people who crack the programs they make. The more people who are using it, the more 'followers' they get, the more companies will start using it, and they will earn more.
