what do people think about the thanks button?

I know the thanks button is widely used here and it is a great way to thank a user for posting.

what do you think about a "no thanks" button? I think that would be a cool way track a users post that might be unwarranted?

Or maybe some type of user rating system should be implied?

Yup, and without causing drama. We've already tried a "thumbs up/thumbs down" feature which wasn't very popular.

Agreed, the report is much more useful and starts far less drama.

The thanks button is perfect, a quick easy way to say thanks without having to cloud up a thread.

Ya, we try to be a little more professional than that. We have too many people with too many varying opinions, sponsors and are looked to by a lot of people for various information. Lots of us have that information and if people saw this forum like that, well it wouldn't quite be the same. That's the entire reason we got rid of the general nonsense, it turned into a section for threads to be locked practically.

I'd been thinking about the possibility of a "demerit" button for stupid/annoying/etc posts, but never posted about it, because I figured the button would likely lead to flames and general argument.

As much as it would be awesomely satisfying to click it against an annoying poster, it would likely trash the thread by the very next post, I guess.

I think the "Thanks" button is a great idea, it makes it easy to tell who is a very big contributor to the forums (not just post count), but I think a "No Thanks" button would just lead to flame wars, and the "report post" button is a far better way of alerting moderators of offensive posts

At other forums it has caused huge amounts of drama. People with preferences were demeriting others for not having the same preference. Random people would sign up to just bash others. then you have the genral idiots.

The report button is for reporting spamming and other thread related issues, but not really for reporting a "misguided" post (eg. out of context or off topic). If that were the case, the reported threads would be in the quintillions by now.

I think that in addition to the thanks button, we should also have a "Erocker hates your post" button. It would not count for anything, not would it be tallied in any way, but it would put the blame on Erocker instead of us for trashing a thread.

Erocker puts up with enough grief while modding the FS/FT forums. But I felt a cheap shot at the poor porridge maker was not too out of line.

We are generally lenient with off topic or off context posts in small patches. It's when those posts derail the thread, cause lulz drama, that we intervene. It's not that we let it get to that either. When something is off-topic, it's under scrutiny. When things go bad, they do get reported, and such reports are not large in number. The community's overall behaviour quotient is very high right now *touch wood*.

Most people do not derail threads too badly with a malicious intent, and I think that most of the users here are pretty good at policing that kind of thing themselves. That says a lot about the community and the mods in general.

I think all is well here at TPU for the time being with just the thanks button.
